alchresearch   214 #169 Posted July 30, 2013 I realize I'm a little late in coming in on this but can someone provide a link to how all this building work is funded.  Thanks  The news story says Government funding of upto £30 million:  http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/business/sevenstone-retail-developer-axed-by-sheffield-council-1-5899719
 Share this content via...
Dragonfall   10 #170 Posted August 6, 2013 Are the developments on and around The Moor being considered as the 'New Retail Quarter' then? Suppose it's fair enough, as it's unlikely that Sevenstone will ever be a reality.  In the light of the failure of the Sevenstone debacle, it looks like the Council (along with Scottish Widows) is now aiming to re-focus the city-centre's main retail heart to The Moor. It seems this is the case, with stores like Primark, TJ Hughes, the Markets moving to Moor locations. And with new stores like Blue Inc. opening recently, and preparations for the new cinema complex underway, this adds to the picture of a retail migration across the city-centre.  If this is case, the question to be asked is - what's the future for the High Street to Haymarket area? Do SCC have a plan on how to deal with this forthcoming problem?
 Share this content via...

Do SCC have a plan on how to deal with this forthcoming problem?  If you do a search you will find this "The whole Castle markets area has been the subject of redevelopment proposals since the 1980s, with part of the adjacent area being redeveloped with a hotel, multi-storey car park and several new office blocks in a development known as "The Square" by Carillion. The original scheme to replace the markets fell victim to the 1990s recession. A new markets building is under construction on The Moor for completion in 2013, which is part a partnership between the council and private developers. The multi-storey car park for the scheme has been built on Eyre Street. Part of the council's current plans is to demolish the existing complex and open up a pedestrian route from the city centre to the Victoria Docks area and the new Riverside Quarter, now that the ring road has been diverted." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Market Not sure how current this may be. It's not central enough, plus its overshadowed by the Manpower monstrosity. The 'heart' of the city is exactly where Sevenstone (rip) was going to be.  Poor Sheffield City Centre. Destroyed by decades of weak leadership.
 Share this content via...

I guess that it's based on old plans, as you've mentioned. The problem SCC will be facing though, is not only what happens to Castle Market area, but also the old TJ's and Primark buildings. Plus the subsequent reduction in footfall, is going to have a negative effective on all the businesses around the High Street, Commercial Street, Haymarket, King Street, Exchange Street etc …
 Share this content via...
WallBuilder   10 #174 Posted August 6, 2013 Once the Castle market closes I suspect any businesses remaining in that immediate area will be looking to relocate a bit further up the hill. If the castle remains could be exposed or a nice green park developed then it could be very nice, if anyone takes a wander to Edward street and the open space they've done there it looks so much nicer.
