Did you take the Striding edge route up Helvellyn? It’s a good scramble and similar to the top section of Ben Nevis.

You must bear in mind that Ben Nevis is 1300 feet higher than Helvellyn above sea level and dress for the anticipated weather on the summit, not the nice weather in the valley as it can change quite suddenly.

The best “beginners” route to the top begins at Achintree Farm in Glen Nevis. Unless you are super fit I’d allow 5 hours for the ascent and 3 hours for the decent.

The views from the top are superb when they aren’t shrouded in mist - you have to choose your day well & have a bit of luck too.

When are you thinking of going? If it’s in the summer take plenty of insect repellent, some of those Scottish midges have to file flight plans they’re that big!

Did you know there is an endurance challenge where you set out to climb Snowdon, Scafell and Ben Nevis (the three highest peaks in the mainland UK) in 24 hours?

One of my work colleagues did it last year.

You do not need any specialised equipment for the ascent like grappling hooks etc but one thing that is a good idea are some lightweight hiking poles to help your balance, particularly on the descent when your legs are tired.

CLICK HERE for a good website that has lots of useful advice and some excellent photos of the route I mentioned, there are other (more arduous) routes but I’d leave those until you are more experienced.

The Regular Route is one of the safest routes up, relatively speaking, but with the wind chill factor it can be a very inhospitable mountain, even in summer.

Good luck with your walk

We are planning to do this next year as part of my continuing fundraising for Meningitis Trust.
