Could you put some names to them, I seem to be more senile than I thought. I recognise Andrew Rodgers, Peter Cowan, Mary Bridden, Janet Savage ?

If you want to see what the old place looks like now, the school are having a plant sale on 19th May 11-3pm. Come on down and bag a bargain. :)

I'm usless with names, but I can remember Celia Davidson and David Baines. I once had a scrap with Peter Cowan and Mary Bridden threatened to tell my Mum about my swearing. :)

Just to the left of the picture is where Mr.Gisborne's dental practice was located. Further up the yard on the left-hand side were those walls that jutted out. Someone said they were the relics of air-raid shelters? Whatever, they were excellent 'goals' for the footie games, such that if you miss out the middle bar, the pitch was an 'E' shape if you see what I mean?

I recognise faces on all photos although I think they are possibly a year or so older than me. It looks like Jon Clayton on the 1st photo. We used to play football on the Bolehills. Anyone remember Pete and Dave Harris the twins who used to organise the teams? Royden Townend and Roy Jessop who also used to play.

My parents shop at 300 Springvale Road was Bakehouse and shop, the backyard was divided by a foot path which led to the houses behind our shop, at the very end of the yard was our air raid shelter, opposite our shop there use to be a newspaper shop I think the guy that owned it was called Dale ???, in the house just behind our shop my sort of girl friend lived there her name was Janet Trigg, I use to call her Trigger. My dad has a ford 8 car (old tin lizzie) they use to call it, and he parked it between a wall and the side of the shop.

Yes, I remember that quartet with ease. Roy Jessop (fair hair) - King Edward's GS - used to organise the cycle speedway round the cookhouse building. The other three were all bosom friends of mine and I still see Royden and Dave Harris. Peter lives in the Worksop area. We all used to travel to watch the Owls and Royden went to speedway with me.

I could probably name you about 30 people who used to play on the Bole Hill's dust pitch way past sunset! Do you recall another lad called John Morley who was devoted to his sheep dog?

John Clayton was on one of the photos. I think a relative of his was Peter Lonsdale who was "Lonnie" on the field!

The other post about Springvale Road was correct with "Dale's". I used to buy sports cards there with the bubble gum which I threw away. The buzz of getting a player that wasn't already in your collection!

John Morley, Pete Wright, Dave Harris, Pete Harris, Chris Middleton, Ray Pantlin, Rob Smith, Jimmy Knapton, 'Albert' Hardy, Ron Pagdin, Keith Rogers, Royden Townsend, Barry Adams, Phil Adams, Roy Jessop, Roger Oliver, Pete Vickers (Knocker), "Cree", Eddie Blagden, Bob Page, Scotherns, Johnny Carrack who has the paints shop at Crookes (Stothard Rd) - brother of Paul, et al

OK this gets more interesting.I was a member of the cycle speedway around the cookhouse. A few more names here then. We pushed Paul Carrack ( ACE ) to be mascot for the Tigers which we went to on thursdays with the Harris twins etc. Unfortunately, although he had all the gear he didn't get it. I remember Lonnie from the football matches on Saturday mornings and virtually every night of the week until it got dark. Dennis Collinswood was a nice lad and a good player. The best player I remember was Bennie, Dave Bennison I think. I was younger than him and had just started going for coaching at Hillsbro on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I could not understand why Bennie never got a chance as he was streets better than I was ever going to be. Phil and Barry Adams were good lads and I remember meeting their Dad much later when he worked at Williams Bros on Green Lane. Rob Smith used to play football in winkle pickers and drainpipes and was a good laugh. John Morley once chased me round the concrete cricet pitch for catching him when I normally ducked. Good cricketer John. The Harris twins were priceless and although I was some years younger, they took me around with them, Roydon and Roy all the time. Particularly to Wednesday away matches- shove halpenny on the train to Leicester and all that.

Ray Pantlin had a trial at Leicester City, which we were all surprised about and I got out of Knocker's way when he came for the ball in his bottle bottomed glasses.

Pete Wright was also on most of our adventures. Tell me more

Sorry to have digressed from Western Road school but I can remember a Geoff who lived on Cobden View Road - and I have the surname in mind?

Another good footballer on the Bole Hills was Steve Toyne who is the general manager of Dinnington Town. The Bole Hills is relevant to the school as it belonged to Sheffield Education Committee - hence the cookhouse - and "field" on the timetable was the Bole Hills. Those wretched railings at the bottom of the field that had spikes to puncture the balls!
