Recycling sheffields derelict buildings

Recommended Posts

Theres always a few derelict buildings in sheffield, the longer you leave them the less demolition needs to be done.

How can you find out if a derelict building is to be demolished/ refurbished?

If it is to be demolished do can you legally retrieve parts of it for your own use?

e.g. take down a wall for bricks

i thought it might be, but wouldn't it make more sense to put old materials to good use rather than into landfill.

most derelict buildings tend to get vandalised and to me i think sometimes thats why they are left so long in the first place, so that the vandals have already demolished most/part of it for free making the demolition job easier

Have you tried cleaning up old bricks for re-use ? Anyway I believe a lot of them are in fact crushed and used as hardcore.

I'm sure lots of bits of them are used... it probably offsets the expense of the demolishing, possibly goes to pay creditors of the owners of the land etc. I'm pretty sure you can't abandon 'real property' (land) ... and in law a house, wall, etc or anything else built on land is part of the land.

I've just been looking at some pics on the BBC website re:demolition of Jessop's Hospital and got to wondering - what happens to all the furnishings/machinery fixtures and fittings. The reason I ask is because when they were tearing down the new Town Hall (or egg box) I remember seeing a desk, telephone and a picture on the wall once one of the outside walls had gone.

Surely someone or the museum could give such things a new home if they can't be put to use. I'd also love to see pics of the inside of such places before demolition - maybe there's already a site and I just haven't found it yet.
