Peat free grow bags

I've been looking for peat-free grow bags for my tomatoes. Does anyone know anywhere around Sheffield that sells them?

I once bought some by mistake and Im trying to think where from. It might have been focus or B & Q who both sell both types. I find the peat free ones quite disappointing, full of twiggy bits. The results arent as good either. I realise that there is an ecological point to be made from them though.

 

The best ones IMO are B & Q ones with peat in! Focus are also good. I thought netto were quite poor, also a bit twiggy. I got some peat free compost recently (also by mistake!) from Lidl. It usually happens when I send my partner to get it!

(Valleyside?) Garden centre out past Crosspool on Manchester Road sells a good range of organic composts and growbags, which I'm fairly sure are peat free.

 

Never had any problems growing stuff in peat free compost/growbags.

Every garden centre I've ever been to has done them, though you have to hunt around for them among the numerous peat containing ones - I've never had any problems with them either.

 

Yellowrose, I'd rather have slightly less good results than use peat - have you seen the effect that peat extraction has had on the (ex) peat bogs of Ireland?... it is a totally unsustainable resource. Still I suppose that thanks to climate change and the melting of the Siberian permafrost we should have plenty more available... every cloud...

Not too bothered about yields! Just want to be peat free

you need to plan your watering very carefully - peat free is a bu*ger to keep moist. I had some last year for the same reasons and just couldn't get it wet ... water rushes straight from watering can to drainage holes ... doesn't even pause for an introduction ...

have you got your grow bags stood in grow bag trays? as it might help

hi Kim, I had ring cultures set up, not growbags, but other folks used growbags (stood up on end) and had the same issues. When watered the peatless bits floated until the water drained.
