Go Flix Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I have a new computer with Vista on it. I fixed my internet connection to this computer by moving my ADSL modem from my old computer (running on XP Pro) and plugged it to this Vista's computer. After googling aroung trying to find an upgraded driver (Vista compatible) for my modem, now my internet connection seems working fine on this Vista. But trouble comes when I tried to link up my XP computer using a LAN cable to this computer. The network looks OK but I can't connect to the internet using my XP. Anyone could help pls?

I have a similar problem, in a way. I have been using the BT Home Hub to desktop XP with a ethernet cable....no problems. but........... My son, at my request used the wireless system on the Home Hub to set a network up between the desktop XP and this Vista laptop 3 or 4 weeks ago. A couple of days ago, I removed the desktop ethernet cable and put the desktop into another room, intending to use another wireless connection for the desktop..... No joy so far......I have inputted the correct WEP Key into the desktop etc, but, although the indications are the signal is very strong, it sees the Hub and is connected to it by wireless, the Home Hub won't lest me connect to BT or the browsers. Haven't sorted it yet. I'm hoping my son will have a go at getting my desktop online this weekend. At least for now I can get onto the internet through the laptop as I type this post.

Can I assume you have set up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on Vista for your dial-up modem (pretend ISDN for ADSL) connection? If not, or you struggle, or there's a problem doing it in Vista, you could always connect with XP and then share to Vista. I've had to deal with Vista a lot personally and I'd just not bother to start with. Alternatively shell-out a few £ for a router and plug both straight in.
shoeshine Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 After some trials today, I'm pleased to say my problem with going Wireless on both desktop and Laptop are now solved. So I can put the ethernet cable away for use some other time. Phew!
Go Flix Posted March 24, 2007 Author Posted March 24, 2007 Thanks alkatraz, I've setup properly the ICS but still no luck. Now I changed the host to the XP one as your advice. It works and both of the computers can connect to the internet now.

Go Flix Posted March 29, 2007 Author Posted March 29, 2007 Just to share and for info to others..... I finally made it!!! Apparently the antivirus (McAfee) on Vista set to firewalled the internet connection shared to the network... turned it off.. voila !!!
