South Yorkshire Police - The Honest Truth

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am writing this thread in hope of getting an honest view into the real South Yorkshire Police. Most recently I have witnessed things first hand which have seriously made me question our police force, and i'm sure any more people on SF have terrible stories about our police that would shocks us all.

Points Of Discussion:-

-Have you come across rude / Offensive / Arrogant officers?

- Have you witnessed any behaviour from a Police officer that you might consider to be heavy handed?

-Have South Yorkshire Police given you stupid waiting times, that in theory could have questioned your welfare?

- (football fans) do you find matchday police offers to be heavy handed and extremely arrogant?

This is an open discussion and is not in any way structured to start any sort of slander / attack on the police, i am just carrying out some open research and want some honest opinions.

Any member who wishes to remain anon but would still like a say, please contact me by PM, and i will post your comments for you.

While I feel the Police could be a little more understanding in some situations they do a job that not many of us should envy. They have a very fine balancing act to achieve between being firm and not tripping over that invisible line to being heavy handed.

I am sure your post is intended to gain an honest opinion of south yorkshire police and as you say you want an open discussion that is not in any way structured to start any sort of slander / attack on the police.

So May I ask why

your proposed points of discussion are all initially negative ?

ie rude /offensive officers :- what about the polite ones that were professional and courteous !!!

Heavy handed behaviour :- what about behaviour that was perfectly reasonable or set a good example !

Stupid waiting times :- What about the times when officers turned up on time or apologised for been overstretched !

Football fans sometimes meet officers who smile and talk to the kids about football and enjoy a bit of banter during the match !

If you are going to ask for some open research and honest opinions don't discredit the initial opening paragraphs with such openly negative suggestions/comments or you will fall at the first hurdle when people perceive you to be biased in the first place

keep smiling:) :) :)

The last time I had to call the police in, at home, they were fantastic, sympathetic, and very helpful. My former next-door neighbour, who had a severe personality disorder (he was so bad, the ambulance service would not come to him, when called, without a large police escort,) had threatened to burn us out. We were terrified, as it was only a couple of months after my grandson had been hospitalised, nearly dying, when some creeetin arson-ed the block of flats my lad lived in, they were trapped on the top floor, (that's a 3-month old, a 2 yr old, a 3 3/4 yr old, and their mummy and daddy) with no means to get out under their own power.

So, you can understand my distress... The police took statements, the housing assoc' took action to evict him, (I had to go to court as a witness)The police helped me make a "witness impact statement" and did all they could to help.

Twenty-odd years ago, it was a different matter. I was assaulted by my ex bloke, and he fractured my cheekbone in the attack. The police back then, didn't want to know, they were very dismissive, andwere not very helpful. They were reluctant to arrest my ex, despite the fact that previous attacks had resulted in me geting an injunction against him, and his approaching me, never mind the assault, was in breach of the injunction. I hope that the attitudes are different now.

Football policing issues?

None:- I attend home matches at Bramall Lane and have a laugh and a joke with the police on duty, it's all good natured. I see no heavy handedness. Even at the away matches I go to, (which, sadly, are not as frequent, these days as they used to be) we've had no problems with the police. We tend to have the same jocular and good natured situation. (one awful incident does come to mind.. in liverpool, in about 2003 in the great cup-run the blades had, we went to liverpool for the return leg of the cup match. The police there, on merseyside, refused to give the SUFC coaches an escort out of Liverpool, to the motorway. (Without exception, pretty much, other police authorities do provide such an escort for away-fans) Almost half the coaches, on our way out of Liverpool were "bricked", and had windows smashed, stranding a number of fans and the coach drivers. It was a very frightening situation

a) yes, but I've come across arrogant people in all walks of life so why should the police force be any different?

b) no

c) no, they've always been pretty good in my experience but that doesn't mean they always are.

d) could it be the pre-match beer clouding your judgement a little?

a) No b)No c)No d)n/a

I have had dealings with the police in the last year when i was the victim of a burglary and later, an assault. They were really nice.

This is in no way a fair survey - you have already made your mind up - but I hope this helps.

a. No - once I got pulled by a traffic cop and he was a bit arrogant, but I had been a plonker, so it balanced out.

b. No

c. No

d. N/A

I've dealt with the police primarily in terms of traffic issues and once reported a break in to my car soem years ago.

I would suggest that for whatever reason you had to come into contact with police, may have played some part in their attitude/behaviour towards you.
