and if so, is it expensive (once you're the there)...are there places that are 'must go' and 'must avoid'...anything else that you could tell me that'd be interesting/useful?

I've been and its proper sweet mate. You'll have a blast. Get yourself to Corcovado and sugar loaf mountain (obviously) and the Maracana stadium and copacabana are also well worth visits.

It isn't mega expensive, but isn't especially cheap either, especially in the touristy areas.

Try to get yourself to a football match as well if you're into that, we saw Vasco da Gama for only a couple of quid, again money well spent.

If your into nightlife and clubbing, Help bar and Symbol are worth visits as well.
