Broadband in shared house...

Help me :help:

I'm a total bimbo and need things explaining VERY slowly and carefully...

In June I'm moving into a shared house... I'll be the first one in, so I'll have to sort of the internet...

How I understand it, is we can have whatever provider we want (We've seen a very good deal on Virgin) and then connect it to a wireless router, and each have those little cards stuck out of our laptops....

Am I right?

I'd like to be able to do it for myself... The only other person I know who knows wireless stuff is an ex and I'd rather him not know where I live... Hmmm....!

Help!

Sounds like you're on the right track. The type of router you need will depend on whether you get your broadband from the phoneline (ASDL) or from Virgin Media (cable).

You simply connect the modem to the router and from there you have a few options of how the other laptops connect.

Most recent models of laptops will have built in network cards to receive the wireless whilst those without will just need a USB plug in adapter.

You can then set up your network and share it with other users using the easy to follow guide through the control panel of your windows operating system. Just remember to secure your network to stop other users nicking your broadband and eating up your bandwidth.

not only that they could do illegal things while on your connection and youd be held responsible for it.

Precisely! Thats why I need someone who knows what they're doing!

It might be an easier option to get in contact with some providers and have them send someone to sort it. It'll cost you but you know it will be reliable and secure.

Hope that helps.

also make sure you read the small print from the ISP, quite a few "unlimited" connections have been found to have download caps and if you have several users using the same connection you could exceed such a cap fairly easily

some ISP's have disconnected users for exceeding resource caps on supposedly unlimited connections

basically the ISP is telling lies by putting "unlimited" in large type on the first page of the offer and then hiding the download capping bit in the small print

rofl @ Twinkle..

----------

most modern routers that you buy will have well documented instructions to setting up security..

just set up what is called WMA encryption.. this is your best bet..

apart from that, you seem to be right on track with what you want..

Twinkle the best router for you would be a netgear one. Very easy to install and I can vouch for the product as I use one myself.

Yeah, Ive been told this a lot... My ex did a wireless network in our flat... :hihi: and we had a netgear router... i wish i'd listened to him now...
