Is caffeine bad for your computer?

Hello all. My little darling a poured coffee through the top vent of my pc case.

It wasnt on at the time and it looks like only a few components have been touched.

What should i do?

I darent turn it on just yet. Will it be ok if i let it dry completely.

Kids eh? They are just full of little suprises:mad:

If it wasn't on and hasn't been on since and you allow it to dry out *completely* then it should be ok. (Assuming it went into the computer rather than the PSU). It might be worth checking under any fans because coffee could have gathered there.

It could have been worse....it could have been a fizzy drink. :) The acid in those will eventually write off a mother board.

As suggested, let it dry out completely and you should be OK. Open the case up and let it dry naturally. Mop up with a DRY kitchen towel any pools - don't use a hair dryer on it, as I've seen people do occasionally. :)

If there are coffee stains then they could cause a slow short. You could try carefully washing the board with distilled water (not tap, or bottled, as they contain all sorts of stuff). Then leaving it somewhere warm and dry.

Assuming its a modern computer then there is a voltage on the board while its switched off in standby. The on button is a push to make switch that triggers an electronic circuit which brings the PSU into full on power mode.

A computer in Standby (playing dead) consumes about 4W of power.

Well that was a tricky moment:heyhey:

Ive never been so worried about pressing a button.

No pop, no bang and i dont have a fried motherboard.

From the looks of it the coffee missed every single major part of my pc and collected in the bottom of the tower. I didnt have the psu plugged in as id not long rebuilt it but it never occured to me that power still went through it.

Thanks for that Karl.

The last time that happened id ventured into water cooling, it didnt go well.

Note to self, stop drinking coffee or better still sell the kids on ebay:hihi: :hihi:

Whilst looking for tips on the best way to save my mobo i stumbled on

. Not sure i would have gone that far but hey, each to their own.
