Why did i catch the knife??

I think it's soem sort of instinctive reaction.

When I was about 12 or 13 years old I knocked a soldering iron off the edge of the table where I was working and did the same thing - tried to catch it.

And caught the hot end.

Errr....Ouch? :)

I work for a machine knife manufacturer, you (don't!) want to see some of the injuries we get here for exactly the same reason - its instinct!:gag:

I know someone who did exactly the same when he dropped his electric jigsaw off his workbench. The major problem was that it was turned on at the time.

It permanently damaged the tendons and nerve supply to his fingers.

I suppose in this instance I'm one of the lucky ones- my instinct is to catch things with my right hand, but it's now partially paralysed, so it doesn't go anywhere fast. Stuff either breaks or spears my foot on the way down. Painful but less damaging.

I have specific instructions in our training and risk assessment things to staff to never try catch things. If they get damaged we talk about that later but people can get very bad injuries catching all kinds of things including heavy items that topple. I had one driver tried to catch a slow runaway (walkaway) vehicle which pinned him against the wall for several minutes.

but if you notice when you do drop something, and you dont catch it, you jump out of the way so it don't get your foot

That reflex can also be reversed after years of wearing steel toe cap shoes.

To prevent something damageing as it falls, I always catch it on my boot toe.

it is always wise not to do this if wearing sandals though.:hihi:
