Volunteers Reqd for Tinsley Canal TPT cleanup over Easter

I'm organising a cleanup of the Tinsley end of the Sheffield Canal. You may have seen the rubbish collecting on the canal bank as you drive along the underpass on the Tinsley Viaduct.

I have asked for a few skips to be placed on Wharf Lane near the post office on Seffield Road from Wednesday 4th April to Wednesday 11th April. Im giving it a week as lots needs to be done and the weather can be variable.

Jobs that needs doing are

1. Cutting back bushes & trees

2. Clearing paths and edges

3. Rubbish collection

4. Seats, Handrails & Lock Gate painting

If you want to help in some way email me at info@244.org.uk or via PM

Thanks to all that came last weekend. The next cleanup will be on Sunday 15th April and will be a Towpath Tidy.

Most people will be assembling at the Tinsley Marina. This can be accessed by car if you go down Shepcote Lane from Darnall to Tinsley. Otherwise the tramstop is Carbrook, on the way to Meadowhall, and just go over the bridge at the side of the tram stop to the canal behind the trees.

The gathering starts at 9.30am for a 15 min safety briefing and then tidying the towpath until 2.00pm when Dave Walker, BW Lock Keeper will begin preparing his barbecue for all participants.

Get in touch for further details.

Let us know when the next one is please! I can't make this one, but the Walkers Group were down the Weirs/Canal last week, and commented on the need for a cleanup! I've stuck a link in our group.

have you tried for a grant ? there are 4000,000 anglers in britain paying £ 24 each for a fishing licence unless on consessions,it would be nice to know just where some of the money was going

I had a walk on that part of the canal this lunchtime (as I often do) and thought to myself it could do with a few people joining in with a cleanup, although its much better than its neighbouring river. Hope it goes well, I could almost be tempted to join in...

Very annoying that the "taggers" (read 'wasters' / 'vandals') keep spraying all the locks and bridges.

Thanks for the support. Up to now there are about 30 volunteers ready to spare their Sunday and looks like its going to be a hot day too hopefully. Lots of different groups attending like the Rotary Club, Adsetts from Sheffiled Hallam Uni, Environmental Agency (who fishermen pay their licences to), British Waterways, Inland Waterways Association, Tinsley Boat Club, Sustrans and Friends of the Sheffield to Tinsley Canal along with anyone else who wants to join in.

Lots of activities planned now alongside towpath clearing, such as painting locks and bush clearing.

Wow, what a day Sunday was with that glorious sunshine! The canal cleanup went along very smoothly with all the groups turning up ready for a few hours of grime. Kitted out with pickers and host of different type bags we set off along the canal. From the base at the Tinsley Marina, some went towards Victoria Quays and the rest headed towards Meadowhall.

I could go on but the best way to read about it is catch the Sheffield Telegraph on Friday as there should be an article written by Dave who is a keen cyclist as well as reporter.
