Surely those that can afford to buy privately should do so, leaving the council houses for people who cant afford to buy privately & therefore need them!

When you've been a council tenant for some years and they give you the chance to buy the property that you're in from them for a huge discounted price, then why not buy a council property?

i live on Parson Cross/Southey/Herries/Wadsley and i think its great.I love it.

I love to lie in bed on a Sunday night and listen to the crooner, singin his head off in the Forty Foot pub:gag:

my hubby and i bought an ex council house, the reason is we couldn't afford the mortgage on a 3 bed private house in this area, the previous owner bought it from council in the 80s after living there since it was built. and theres just as many council houses been demolished as sold.

council estates aren't that bad, i know people who live on manor and dont complain of trouble any more than someone living else where.

the worst stories come from Winn gardens, I have been told, if the council move you there they are saying your not fit for society

i put my name down for a council place on winn gardens 4 yrs ago and got told it was a sought after area:huh:

Reading through these posts brought to mind something that happenedto me many years ago.Whilst sat in a cafe having a tea and feeding my son who eas then 4mths (now 21)got chatting to a woman discussing things in general when she asked had i far to get home.no i replied only to Hyde Park to which she replied oh you dont look like someone who lives on there. Peoples perceptions can be so very wrong

Council estates can be some of the best places to live..

I live in a nice quiet posh area of Conisbrough,Doncaster and I hate it...Growing up I lived in a pit village (Dunscroft/Hatfield/Stainforth) in Doncaster and for a few years I also lived in various council areas of Sheffield and I loved it I knew my neighbours and there was a better sense of community..where I live know people dont talk to each other I hardly know my neighbours and if I say hello to anyone while walking dog etc they look at you as if your an alien etc..

I worked my arse off to get the job I have know which gives me the resources to be able to live in a nice posh house in a sought after suburban area but when the next house I buy will probably be on a council estate probably Greenhill Sheffield...

Dont get me wrong though there are parts of some council estates which can be like beirut and even myself being very streetwise would be cautious walking through but with support from councils and residents these estates can be turned around.

I can remember a few years back there was a story telling how residents of Low Edges, Sheffield had to put bars on there windows and doors! but with the alliance of residents and the support of Sheffield City Council aswell as community police officers having a more vigorous presence the estate has become a more friendly neighborhood..
