Meanwhile back in the land of reality, the BNP have suffered a deluge of new membership applications resulting in a bottleneck in membership processing.

And there again they could be trying to give the more naive among you the belief that the party is growing when in actual fact it looks to be splitting.

An investigation by the Guardian has revealed that the fundraising group Civil Liberty, which claims to be independent of any political party, is run by key BNP activists with all the money donated through its website going to the BNP's regional headquarters in the north-east.

 

No doubt the Guardian is probably spouting off about BNP members using false names, yet fails to remember that their own investigative reporters do the same thing!

There was a good article on media influence in a recent edition of the BNP monthly magazine Identity(which non-members can subscribe to and I can recommend as an interesting little read). Television, the article suggested, has to a large extent replaced personal contact in establishing social and moral norms. But the 'norms' then become those of the TV producers rather than those which might actually be held by the populace at large. The article included this commentary:

 

Most adults can be placed into one of two categories: mass or individual. In the first category are those whose urge to conform in belief and behaviour overwhelms any urge to think or act independently. In the second category are those able to depart from the crowd if their reason and instincts tell them that they should.

 

The relative sizes of the two categories change, but ever since records have been kept the first category has always been much larger than the second. But at all times it has been the minority of individuals, able to overcome the urge to conform and inclined to strike out in new directions - morally, artistically, technologically or otherwise - which has provided the variation necessary for cultural and social evolution.

So BNP members (I know you aren't angle20) need a degree in Sociology now to understand the latest nonesense in BNP publications.

 

I remember similar articles in hippy magazines in the late '60's - although they would have concluded something like "Drop Out" or "Kill the Pigs".

 

The BNP and far right generally are so far off the pace it's laughable.

On the subject of grammar schools (about which I had a discussion with Disco Cat on the old thread) I've just come across an interesting statistic: viz that in the 200 top performing state schools only 3% of the pupils are from low income families (as measured by entitlement to free school meals).

 

I wonder if anyone from the 'socialist' side would care to comment on this?

On the subject of grammar schools (about which I had a discussion with Disco Cat on the old thread) I've just come across an interesting statistic: viz that in the 200 top performing state schools only 3% of the pupils are from low income families (as measured by entitlement to free school meals).

 

I wonder if anyone from the 'socialist' side would care to comment on this?

 

It's meaningless, as without the data to show which children performed brilliantly, and which didn't, it's impossible to tell whether the 3% who are from a fiscally disadvantaged background performed so brilliantly as to help the school achieve a higher league table result, or if the opposite is the case.

Seeing as most top performing state schools tend to serve overwhelmingly middle class areas it hardly comes as a surprise.

 

Personally I'm saddened that the government hasn't been able to do much to increase social mobility - although originally coming from a mining village I'm also aware of how much peer pressure (or even downright bullying) is applied to bright kids.
