Old Sheffield trams

I have never seen the old trams in Sheffield only the current old trams in Blackpool which are thought were great even if bumpy & old but really add a lot of character to the town. I presume the ones in Sheffield were very similar & would love to see them so if anyone can find any links as I can't that would be most appreciated.

BTW Can anyone remember the remains of old tram tracks up until quite recently at the top of the moor?

I was away from Sheffield when they finally got rid of them, but strangely in 1963 I found myself in Hong Kong where many of our old trams were still being put to good use.

Most of the old trams were scrapped at Tommy Wards scrap yard which was at the Meadohall corner of the Meadowhall Retail Park. By the way does anyone remember the name of the pub between there and Tinsley wire:confused:

The tramway system in Sheffield cost an massive amount of money to build. When the greenfield estates such as Shiregreen were created, it was found to be cheaper to invest in the ominbus, which had become a reliable and more versatile option, than spend a deal of money on the infrastructure (tracks and cables etc.),of the tramway. So it was really on it's way out well before the war.

A great loss I've very fond memories of the old trams and if you ever worked in the East end when we has industry there, you will know what a fantastic job they did tranporting huge numbers of people.

Thing was you never knew what would arrive, a new Roberts car, or maybe an old rocker panel car from 50 yrs back, trhat had been rebuilt several timed in the workshops. Hindsights a wonderful thing, back then they thought it progress, now we see it was not.

There is one thing about the old Sheffield trams and buses that nobody ever seems to mention: the fact that the last tram or bus of the day on some routes also carried a post box where you could mail letters.

 

I grewing up during, and after, WW2. Most of the buses and trams of my chidlhood were relics from the 1920's and 30's. The old double decker buses had a bracket on the back near the open platform. The old trams had the same type of bracket but it was on the platform, on the right as you boarded.

 

When I asked my dad what these brackets were for, he said that is where they hung the mail boxes. Apparently the last trams or buses on certain routes, coming into town had these boxes. You just waved the tram or bus down (like the old "request" stops we used to have) and posted your letter. When the tram got to town or the depot, the boxes were turned over to the Post Office for sorting,etc.

 

I believe the service was discontinued at the begining of the war (maybe a little earlier) and never started again.

Commercial??? perhaps. On the corner opposite TWIL, I believe was the Commerical, sadly demolished last year.

Yeah remember them. They should have kept them.

 

It seems strange that most of the tram lines are still in place. They recently dug up Broomhill near corner of Crookes Road, and you could see the old line.

 

A few Sheffield trams are still in service, (albeit in a museum)
