Wireless networking conundrums

Hello everybody

I am a confused goose....

Does any body have experience of setting up a wireless router system? At the moment I have a new-ish iMac connected to a cable modem (we use Telewest Blueyonder for our broadband).

I would also like to run my work PC laptop on the system from other rooms - I use VPN software for remote access of my email/network server in Wakefield..

Could I set up a wireless network? The PC laptop has it built in...

You'd be best off getting a wireless router. You'll have the ability to connect wirelessly and you'll get the security benefit of being behind a NAT router. Most wireless routers will also have at least 4 switch ports so you can connect with a cable as well.

If you're on Telewest - they will give you a wireless router if you sign up for another years contract. They aren't a particularly great model but if you're staying put then it's as good as free. It may only be on 4mbit and 10mbit accounts where it's free though, not sure.

They're simple enough to install - just make sure you cut the power to the cable modem before you plug the router into it otherwise the cable modem won't recognise a new device has been connected and will refuse to give it an IP.

Anything else you want to know - me or plenty of others on here will be able to help.

Doesn't the Telewest supplied router only support one device though?

I understood it was restricted in firmware so that although you now have wireless capability, you don't actually have a network as such, which is ok as ntl:Telewest don't support home networks.

No it's just a 4 port Netgear WGR614v6 with standard firmware (well apart from username is set to telewest). I usually have a couple of wired devices and a few wireless running off it. The radio is a bit flaky and port forwarding isn't great but apart from that it's ok for free. Telewest don't mind you running a home network - support wise they probably just bung you off to Netgear.
