As a side issue, the history of taxation is interesting, see 'Politics.co.uk' , under Income Tax.

 

First introduced in 1799 to help pay for the Napoleonic wars, repealed in 1816 after Waterloo, re-introduced in 1842. There's some campaigners who dispute the government's right to charge income tax on private earnings as opposed to business earnings, but I've not read up on that futile challenge !

there is a tax office at the bottom of the moor near Wickes if you don't like using the phone

There is, but I'm fairly sure you can't just walk in and speak to someone.

You have to ring up first for an appointment.

Well, I eventually got through......£800 rebate ����

 

That's odd for the tax code, but not unheard of. Bonus si they give you money although might be through increasing the allowance on the tax code now rather than a refund cheque.

Apparently they will send me a cheque in 3/4 weeks time. We shall see

......., I got very frustrated and hung up. Is it possible to speak to a human being anymore?

 

 

i didn't think they had humans in the tax office :)
