Went in here the other night, first time for a year or two. Oh dear. There was a big dog running round, decor looking shabby, in need of a deep clean. Generally not a very nice place to be.

A lot of the more 'heritage' good beer pubs in Sheffield could be described like that, Shakespeares for example is a complete tumble down dump, but the beer and staff are great.

The Rutland, yeah it could probably do with some new furniture and lick of paint, but it is clean. You wouldn't expect somewhere like the Rutland to be a generic, modern, Ikea showroom like decor - it is the remains of a heritage pub with wooden divedes, mirrors, etched glass branding etc. It attracts an eclectic mix of customers from young socialists to businessmen who enjoy the good beer, food and atmosphere and the various bits and bobs - some humorous - on the shelves around the pub and the random art and photography on the walls.

Despite being in the City Centre I'd also class it as a community local so friendly dogs wandering around is part of the charm - it isn't meant to be some stuffy or trendy gastropub - although the food does happen to be nice!

Totally agree, but I have friends who aren't beardy hipsters, just normal folk who drink in Shakespeares, but who refuse to go in the Rutland until it's cleaned up. They love their beer and are happy to pay craft prices, but they just think its a bit of a cesspit...so refuse to go.

Me? I'm not as discerning.

Do they not complain about Shakey`s toilets?! (I`m not discerning either but I do think Ruttie needs a change).

I used to go to Rutland Arms lunchtime when the people that had all that egyptian stuff inside the pub had it. Pie and peys for two quid lashings of Hendos, lovely.

Shakespeare's have new toilets, a much needed investment, the bar doesnt stink of sewage anymore as a result.

They happily drink in Shakespeare's yet complain about the Rutland?

Was thinking the same myself...

Hi, longtime lurker first time poster.

Firstly, I am not sure how a dog wandering round a pub somehow means it is struggling? I go in to the Rutland a lot and would say it has gotten busier over the past couple of months. The beer selection has expanded since the new ownership and the food is great, far better than most pubs.

Reading this thread it sounds like it is a question of taste more than anything. Personally I find Shakespeares uncomfortable and a bit grimy. Although that didn't put me off going in the past, especially as the beer selection is always fantastic. For me the Rutland is more comfortable and a wee bit cleaner.

I worry that if there were a refurb of either pub it would end up like the Closed Shop, Washington, or Ship. The first was just about OK but the other two have lost character through insensitive refurbishment.

Just my thoughts! Two

Glad to see the thread title has been rewritten and, even more amazingly, my admonishment of the mods has stayed up!

I think you will find that reporting the thread and asking for a title change is more effective than admonishing the mods.

American tap takeover starts today on the keg lines....

http://www.facebook.com/events/309576006160965

Then in a couple of weeks there is a Spanish beer and tapas event

http://www.facebook.com/events/358250871257260

The Rutty now has a regular small plates/tapas section of both the regular menu and specials board with 3 dishes for a tenner, this can be combined with 3 third pints of beer for £15.50.
