hitchhiker
Hi, I've had this problem before which ended in me fresh installing XP but this isn't an option this time. that was due to somone turning off a work computer while an update which needed a reboot was installing. Anyone got any ideas? The computer won't start with command prompt.

hitchhiker
Where does the boot process get to before it restarts? with the command prompt, not very far - it reboots quickly. With normal startup it does go into the windows startup process but reboots before the login screen. The machine is XP Pro AMD 64, 512mb ram
sallonoroff
I guess it doesn't go into Safe Mode either...? .
hitchhiker
I guess it doesn't go into Safe Mode either...? No. Last time I saw this it was due to a temp file from a windows update written somewhere into the startup processes which caused the loop. If I could install access comand promt I could access the system restore I think?
sallonoroff
Try booting from the Windows CD and loading the recovery console. See if you can do what you want to from in there. Failing that it's a 'Repair' installation of Windows. .
Ann*
Have you tried putting your XP (Recovery) disk(s) in before you boot up, to see if you get the three installation options. It could be that you just need to reinstall XP over the top of what's already there. ....but you've probably tried that.

Change the order you boot from to point at your floppy drive. cd into windows win to start XP manually i think.
hitchhiker
Try booting from the Windows CD and loading the recovery console. See if you can do what you want to from in there. Failing that it's a 'Repair' installation of Windows. This was one of the first things I tried. I don't have a windows automated system recovery disk for this computer. If I boot from a CD, if I choose to repair windows, it doesn't find any errors. If I choose to setup XP now, it says that 'setup didn't find and hard disk drives installed in your computer', which is a bit strange as a normal boot at gets to the windows splash screen which is on the HDD. This is a bit strange, however, I'm still 99% sure it's a software problem
hitchhiker
Create a boot disk from another machine. Tried this a couple of times. It wouldn't boot from the floppy disk (which I think may be a separate probelm.) Just get the disk boot failure message
