Pook
Right, so if enough people kick up a fuss, we can get bus lanes, parking restrictions, traffic lights, speed cameras, cycle paths and countless other things done to our streets. Now, could that same logic be used to turn a public street into a smoke-free zone? if enough people say they want it, can it be done? Places like the peace gardens, sharrowvale road, eccy road etc
SheShe
As a non smoker I really do think you are infringing on peoples rights to have their own quality of life with this one. Although I hate being "puffed at", and a lot of people do it on purpose if they see you don't like it, You cannot enforce something like that unless the sale of cigarettes are lawfully banned. We know this won't happen because they bring in too much revenue. We have to rely on the smokers being courteous enough to keep their smoke away from others. muddycoffee
As a person who is anti smoking, I also cannot see a good reason to stop smokers smoking in the open air, as long as they don't blow it on anyone or drop fag ends onto the floor. Places like the peace gardens, sharrowvale road, eccy road etc I'm absolutely certain that if enough people complain about anying then our left wing masters will legislate against it. A minority of Sheffield people complained about a proposed IKEA on the Parkway and a McDonald's on Ecclesall Road and got their wish so anything is possible. It only takes one person with a dislike for something to find a few like minded supporters and they can get it banned. Unfortunately the ban everything brigade don't ever think that they do anything that ought to be banned. I have news for them they do, it's called sticking their noses into other folkes business and that should definately be banned.
slimsid2000
We have to rely on the smokers being courteous enough to keep their smoke away from others. In an ideal world they would. I have to say that in my experience it very often does not happen and without restrictions many smokers (not all) do not show such courteous behaviour. nick2
I realy worry about the anti-smoking people, what will they do once smoking has been banned ? The number of posts on the forum will probably drop by 75%.

Phanerothyme
I'll stop smoking in the open when: a) I quit/die or b) Everyone else stops driving their internal combustion vehicles in the open and does so in the privacy of their own home instead. The number of posts on the forum will probably drop by 75%. Well you know how people go on about Brigades on here these days? You know, the PC Brigade and all those? There's a really big Self-Righteous Brigade on here too. This forum would go out of business if people stopped smoking and eating burgers. Anyway, SheShe, muddycoffee, here's someone who smokes and takes care to keep it out of people's faces (I keep an empty fag packet on me for 'butts' and have done for years). Nice to see some people are level-headed about it all.
