Where to go for a nice quiet traditional pub lunch?

Recommended Posts

Try the Fox & Hounds at Marsh Lane just the top side of Eckington. They do a great range of "in house" cooked food with special prices for pensioners. You would be best advised to phone and book a table before you go. They are usually very busy and if you call "on tick" you could find yourself waiting for a seat. The turnover isn't too slow so you would get a table but I always book in advance.

The Stables Bar at Monsal Head. It's a converted barn with real fire, real ale and hearty food. It's quiet and located in a most beautiful area, overlooking Monsal Dale.

For something a little different why not try Hassop Hall which offers a silver service three course meal for about (though don't quote me) £15 per head? The food is 'like grandma used to make' which to me means excellent and the surroundings are lovely. I was pleasantly surprised when I went there last summer.

The Bull's Head at Castleton. Totally renovated and now offering comfy leather settees and very good (and plentiful) food. Their accommodation is also nice.

Closer to home, the Sportsman at Hallam is for me, a real winner. The food is absolutely superb, real home-made stuff and their range of beers is another big plus. You might struggle to get in though as the place fills quickly and it is only a small pub.

One more? Let's see. Ah, what about the Horns at Bradfield? Again, decent food (meat and potato pie with Henderson's anyone?!), good ale and a stunning view toward Strines.

One more? .

Good call with the Stables, excellent food, great beer and smashing view. Gets extremely packed so either get there early or eat in the hotel next door which serves the same food, at same prices, but doesn't offer quite the same atmosphere.

You are seriously out of date with £15 per head at Hassop, add a further tenner plus drinks and it will be at least double that. Smashing venue though and also very popular. Make sure you book.

If you want a decent pub lunch in the Peak District and stay under £20 a head then I would recommend;

The Plough at Hathersage - on the road to Grindleford, past David Mellor.

The Bull at Ashford

Rowleys at Baslow

The Druid Inn at Birchover

The last two will be pushing the £20 barrier but the food is quality.

Finally I would advise caution with the Red Lion at Litton, only been once since Terry the old landlord died and I wasn't entirely convinced.

Enjoy!
