big_g
If you drive along Fulwood Road towards town, past the foot of Manchester Road, you will reach a set of traffic lights. At this point, there are two lanes heading into town, the right hand one directs you down Glossop Road, the left hand one towards Western Bank. With me so far – good. Drive through this set of traffic lights and the road narrows (but is still classed as two lanes) – this is the bit before the pedestrian crossing just outside Somerfield. If I drive through this particular junction and am going straight on, I usually end up with my nearside wheels in the gutter. If I’m turning right, my offside wheels are usually right on the white line in the middle of the road. I often breathe in as I drive through the junction (I believe this makes the car thinner). And if a bus emerges from Glossop Road, it’s almost a brown trouser moment. Yesterday, I was about to negotiate this junction. I was stopped at the lights waiting to turn right. Nothing was on my left. Lights went to amber just as the cab of a bin wagon appeared next to me (at about my rear quarterlight). Lights went to green and I would normally have started driving forward – but I was aware of this truck next to me. Had I of driven forward, there would not have been sufficient room for both me and the bin wagon to get through the junction. I do believe one of us would have gotten squished – and being the smaller vehicle, I think that it would have been me! So, has anyone else had similar happen at this junction? Has anyone had an accident at the junction? Had I set off (I would have crossed the white line of the traffic light before the bin wagon), and then made contact with the wagon, who would have been to blame? Cheers G
al_partridge
The problem I have with that junction is when the traffic lights for the left hand lane, i.e. for going straight on, are on green, and those for traffic turning right are on red, I always end up tooting my horn at some numpty in the left hand lane who's just sat there because of the red light for the other lane. BasilRathbon
If you're unsure about how traffic lights work, I can recommend an excellent book called The Highway Code.
Pook
it is narrow there. Very narrow. the danger i find is people tend to move over to the right, and often cut the corner with traffic coming back up glossop road. then a bit further down, the crossing with glossop/clarkehouse road traffic light has been moved in such a way that if you're turning right it's really easy to mistake the light which is actually for those going down clarkehouse from broomhill to be for glossop round drivers. i've made the mistake twice, but stopped myself very very quickly. big_g
Drive your own drive. Truck drivers know what they are doing. What does that mean? I'm confused - doesn't take much. Does that mean I should have driven on (I would have been hit). Had I of driven on, I reckon I would have been in the right. However, little old me fighting against Veola in the courts is not what I had down as a task for the new year. Also, I don't think my kiddies would have been too pleased at having the bin waste from Fulwood deposited all over them. G

scottf
i always wonder why they have traffic lights for cars that are going straight on at that junction?? cos apart from the crossing there seems no point in having sequenced lights cos no other traffic can turn onto that road!
