Landlord from hell: a bit of advice

Recommended Posts

We're just having THE worst time ever with our current landlord and don't know what to do!

I've lived in Sheffield for the last 5 and a half years, and met some pretty ignorant fools, but this one really takes the biscuit. We told him on the 2nd July - the day after we moved in - that our bathroom ceiling was leaking. And he, in his infinite wisdom, chose to do nothing about it.:loopy:

Then on the 7th December, the ceiling bulged with water and eventually caved in, bringing down almost all the bathroom ceiling. He "repaired it" the next day with a bit of tarpaulin over the roof, then went on holiday, and he's now ignoring our calls!

That's just the tip of the iceberg; he owes us money too from a refund he promised us after we moved into a building site. He's just the most idiotic one I've met yet!

I kind of needed to rant. But I also think you guys should be warned about him in advance! So if you have the misfortune to view a house that belongs to a guy called ****** *******, be warned. He's a very nice man, and I'm sure would make a great friend. But as a landlord, he's the worst piece of luck you could ever get landed with. He'll make promises and then take your money and run.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, my bedroom is on the ground floor front of our house, and it took him 5 months to give me bedroom curtains. Charmer, eh? I've seen his house, it's all plasma screens and SMEG fridges. I'm sure if he had a daughter, he would be treating her a little better than me.

Hi there,

I would suggest you get specialist advice asap from someone who gives housing advice, eg: http://www.shelter.org.uk or a local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Landlords have repairing obligations to tenants but of course if people kick up a stink and get external agencies eg: Environmental Health in then some landlords get a little annoyed and if you have an assured shorthold tenancy and not in a fixed term can be quite easy for a landlord to evict someone, they have to follow a process etc but dont need a reason, so just be very very careful!

Environmental Health may inspect the premises and serve a notice on the landlord to confirm the works he needs to complete & give him timescales or you could perhaps try to get a local agency involved to see if they could nudge the landlord.

Good luck and be careful.

Not being funny or anything but curtains are a tenner from TJ's. You didn't have to wait for him to do it. Its not a law to put curtains up, its just nicer for tenants. We left all the curtains in the house we rent out and expect them left when they move out.

I know you've had a tough time with him, did you sign up for 6 months or a year?

Some landlords can be awful.

One of my landlords in Liverpool tried upping the rent during the term and not fixing a leak in the kitchen. We said we werent going to stay if he didnt fix it. We had a 12 month term, so he threatened the usual action and demanded £800 as a get out clause. We refused and threatened to tell the council as the house had loads of faults.

A week later we posted his keys back and that was it, lost the deposit yeah but got out of the contract.

The next landlord was ultra fussy and told us he wasn't going to give us our deposit back as there was dust on the skirting boards. After threatening legal action, he rang me on sunday and said he would give it me back (we left in september)

This landlord is ok, he is friendly and lets us have pets!!!:|:hihi:
