Why is the Sky Broadband router a piece of crap?!

So yeh, I've been at my Parents' over Christmas, on Dad's Sky Broadband Internet connection, and having no end of problems with the damn router!

Damn thing often doesn't connect, regularly "times out" while connected, and generally acts annoying and crap.

Will Sky Broadband do anything about it? Nope, we're stuck with THEIR hardware cos we're using THEIR connection! Even AOhell has better customer support than these jokers!

Apparently my Brother has found a patch somewhere to enable us to use a different router, but that still doesn't excuse the fact that Sky BB is a load of arse!

Sounds like a problem I had with my router when I bought it last year (different provider, but hey), and all that was needed was to change the channel (usually default is 1, and I was told to change it to 10).

Trolling,I was sympathising with you, how did we really but up with a 56K modem, I know its hard to convey emotion on the Internet put you have got the wrong end of the stick altogether.

Wasn't you mate.. I had 5 years of dial up, because when I first got dial up, Broadband hadn't been invented yet.

I have sky broadband myself, its good so far, although I have found that it does often try and connect too fast! The noise margin level on the line goes too low at peak hours which results in disconnection, they say a fix is the reboot the router at the busiest time, then it will take the worse line noise as normal and set the router to sync at a speed that will stay stable. I have a URL that can be used to get your username/password for the sky network, you can then use whatever router you like.http://dg834gt.mognuts.com/NetgearRouterUtility.html

http://www.skyuser.co.uk is also a good place for sky broadband help, really useful forum.

Really? I'm sure i've had broadband since December 2000. And ISDN has been available for yonks.

I first got the Internet 9 years ago last Monday... Was on dial up with ClaraNET for the first few months, then I stupidly went with AOhell, cos they were a bit cheaper than ClaraNET, but as I learned, cheap doesn't always = good, I'd have been better off sticking with Clara.

Anyway then back in 2001 I got Pipex after I saw an ad in the Star that they were doing wireless broadband, expensive at £46 a month but at the time it was the only provider who came this far up Stannington, even though the Pipex exchange is in Shiregreen, even further away than the BT one at Wadsley Bridge near the Fletcher's factory! (eh?!)

Changed to Wanadoo 2 years later when they were still Freeserve, and have been with them ever since, even though they're now Orange.

Try downloading Net Stumbler and see if any other local networks are on your channel. Move to another one if so. Doing so cured my wireless connection issues.
