Knitting in public!!!

After 2 years of knitting - I knit in public for the first time today!

Well, by public I mean in the office in front of 2 colleagues - one of which is a bloke that couldn't care less even if I was knitting whilst doing naked headstands against the wall and the other colleague who took a vague interest in progress of the heel of my sock.

The reason why I'm so excited about this is that due to me being self taught in the art of knitting, there are a lot of things that I do 'wrong' but that work perfectly well for me. E.g, I hold me needles all wrong but I like it like that...I never had anyone to show me the 'right' way. Because of this I hate the idea of knitting in front of other people in case I get criticised by some kind of knitting snob for it. The only person I have knit in front of is my other half as he really wouldn't know one end of a needle from the other.

Anyway, just thought I would share :D

Congratulations :D .

As for knitting the 'right' and 'wrong' way - there's no such thing. There's only what works for you. I altered the way I held and wrapped the working yarn after seeing the 'proper' way in the Stitch n Bitch book, but that's only because it felt more comfortable and seemed more efficient. The way you hold the needles is a personal thing and, I should imagine, quite difficult to change once you've knitted that way for a while

I agree - there is no right or wrong way to knit. When I teach people how to knit I never tell them how to hold the yarn and needles. It is amazing how people settle into their own way of doing things. Yes - they may look at what others are doing and adopt some of their method but in the end it's what you are comfortable with that counts. Well done gempud for getting out the needles and showing them what you can do:thumbsup:

I was delighted when I was on a train up north earlier this month. I usually feel I have to have to coyly get my needles out and start knitting under my coat. But there in the seat next to me was a young lass armed with 4 DPNs and was furiously knitting away doing her first ever pair of socks. With the two of us clacking away with the needles, it was the most civilised train journey I'd had in a long time!!

Cheers, Carrie

Last time I knitted in public was on a train last year. I got stared at be everyone like I was some kind of nutcase! I would love to be nice and confident about it but can't I'm afraid - too much of a scaredy-cat!

They were just gazing in awe at your skill  .

...Maybe we should take it one step further and have a SF knitting group meet-up somewhere?

That subject was brought up last year, but it sort of fizzled out. Maybe it's time to resurrect the idea again?

Of course - why didn't I think of that!

In all the years I've been knitting, I've never felt comfy with it although I think it is getting more common, so when we knitters eventually take over the world it'll be soooo easy!
