What to do in Amsterdam

Recommended Posts

We are off on a family jaunt to Amsterdam in Feb, and would like some ideas on something different we can do this time. We have been a few times before with the kids and always end up doing the same things i.e wandering around and going on boat trips. We did visit the nemo museum last time but don't want to go again.

Is the Anne Frank museum interesting for kids?

Thanks

Anne Frank museum was haunting for me but well worth the trip.

Reiksmuseum (sp) was very very boring, unless you like looking at family portraits from years ago and all the crockery the dutch royals used i'd give it a miss.....

Van Gogh museum was amazing, truly, I never saw the appeal in his art till I actually saw a real painting, the textures are phenomenal.

Boat trip on the canals can be fun, some of the parks are good too.

I generally go for the herbs and fungus side of things tho...

I totally agree, got to be the dullest place in Europe. The modern art museum is good, not too far from the van gogh. I’d like to check out a resturant I read about a while ago, they have there own green houses and grow a lot of there ingredients on the premises.

there is plenty to do in amsterdam - i enjoy just walking round the place, much to see and do. Vondel park is pretty cool for a nice stroll even in winter. Not sure how long you have there but you could go to the beach, you can jump on a bus to Noordwijk and go there for the day, its a very chilled local beach resort bit also very nice.

Would be interested to know the ages of your children re-relevant trips? You can get a bus to the Catholic village of Volendam (35 mins) - from near Centraal Station - and then if you change in Monnickendam coming back, there is a bus to Marken which is a Protestant village. They contrast very nicely but if the kids are young - maybe not.

There is an area called Waterlooplein where at certain times, there is a flea market. A look around the Arena (newish home of Ajax) would be a must for some. For anyone older, Het Concertgebouw (concert hall) and the Rijksmuseum would be musts! This pair and the Van Gogh museum are very close together.
