Is it a router and an adsl modem? Or just a router?

If its both:

Try goin on my network places, then network connections. Right click on the wireless icon, click on properties, then highlight tcp/ip connections and click properties and make sure that the 'obtain ip addess automatically is selected'

okies it could be the midget? hehe

its a linksys wireless-G ADSL home gateway router and the laptop is an acer inspiron.

I know the laptop is fne cause if i sit at the bottom of the garden i can piggy back on someone elses connection. But its a bit cold to sit out side.

On the first page of the router config screen you need to set encapsulation method to PPPoA. You also need to set VCI to 38 (default 35). Enter your username and password as given by the ISP and you may as well check the keep alive box. Rest of the settings should be ok on default. Once you've done that then click the save settings button.

The DSL light should start flashing green before turning solid to show it's synch'd with the exchange. The internet light will then flash before lighting to show that it's logged in and you have a working internet connection. Once that's sorted then look at setting the wireless up properly i.e. turning security on.
