Heyesey
We've fed them loads of times and my son love it. They come and eat out of your hand and we've never had any problems with them at all. Trouble is, your average young child is likely to hold the seeds so that the squirrels can't nip the seeds without biting a finger or two. Swans often have the same problem when they're trying to take bread from youngsters.
JoeP
Hmmm..... Sounds like they've been eating the left over fast food mentioned on other threads, and it's turned them ADHD. BTW - I think they pobably have fleas and ticks, so don't let them get TOO friendly!
StarSparkle
Perhaps you just came across the local 'chav' squirrels? I believe they operate in packs. Did you spot any burberry? StarSparkle
DBSx2
Perhaps it's just because it's winter and food is short? Or maybe it's the hormone inflated fast food and cider they've been eating and drinking sending them into a wild rage at the sight of human infants? kblade
I went over a couple of months ago after hearing they were so 'tame' and hoping for a photo. Didn't take any food but presumed they'd be about and not scoot at the sight of people like in general they do! I did indeed get a couple of inquisitve ones. Looking what was in my hand (unfortunately for them my camera only) and it was quite comical. I do however now realise what hungry wildlife is like in the Winter months after being so used to human handouts! I went over to Hillsborough park to feed the ducks/geese not so long since and dear lordy!!!!!!!!!! Swarmed wasn't the word!!!!! Yes it was hilarious but quite unnerving to my 8 year old who hid behind a tree!
Mathom
Go to Bakewell, the geese there will eat right out of your hand. just put some bread in your palm and they'll eat it up. It can't possibly hurt because they have spoon shaped beaks. It's really cute! Same with squirrels, just put the food in your palm and they won't hurt you. hockeybear
Pics of my lad and the squirrels I got no where near as close as your lad did, they came to about 3m of me grabbed the nut and ran. I've put a couple of pics in my album and I think I'll go back while I'm on holls and try again. Dave..
duckweed
I remember a while ago my husband sat down in the rose garden and one jumped on his knee and pee-ed on him. No we weren't feeding them. I wouldn't get too close especially small children, they have sharp teeth after all they can crack open nuts.
NoPests
The gardens would be a nice place to reintroduce the native red squirrel, just need to get rid of the foreign invaders 1st
