How to Defrost a Turkey

Recommended Posts

Its frozen solid!

Any idea's, I just discovered that I forgot to take Tina out of the freezer last night. Should I just bung it in the oven frozen, or should I just run a hairdryer over it before I cook it? Any idea's, I'm getting desperate.

If all else fails, I may have to make a Ham sandwich.

bung it straight into the oven? hairdryer?

good god, NO!

not unless you and the family want matching beds in the hospital!

you'll give yourselves food poisoning.

mustard goes nicely with ham.................................................

(or so I'm told!)

Xircon,

1)I would think a turkey would be too big for most domestic microwaves,

and

2) I would think the turkey's flesh would be too big to defrost safely. so quickly.

it needs a good couple of days in a fridge to defrost enough to roast.

i'd be very wary of trying that.

as I said. Mustard goes well on ham sandwiches... or you could "spice" it up with a bit of cheese.

Zircon, no I don't have a Microwave, I'm much more of a traditionalist. I could always leave it on a luke warm radiator for an hour or so... not sure if that would lead to a bout of the runs though.

Dismember it, it will make you feel better and heat up those beans!

DO NOT even consider eating that bird today.

As PT says - if it's been in the freezer until this morning you're stuffed.

How big is it and what does the wrapping on the bird say? Go by that.

You're probably looking at Wednesday being the earliest to consider cooking it, if it's an average to reasoably sized bird.

DON'T put it in hot water, run the hair dryer over it, microwave it, etc. Just stick it in a basting tray (as it thaws you'll get some water) and put it somewhere at room temperature.

It will be thawed when you can push a skewer through the THICKEST part of the bird without it grinding ice crystals - I'd give it at least 1.5 days, but go by the instructions. You need to make sure that the skewer can go through the legs and the breast without undue resistance.

Rushing it or cooking it before it's thawed is VERY risky - it's not soemthing I'd consider event attempting, under any circumstances.
