RichJester
It hardly ever connects. The battery lasts for about 30 minutes aswell. Is it worth repairing? Anyone had any experience with this? I'm just worried if i repair it, few months down the line it will just go back to the way it was. Its the connection inside the laptop thats faulty. Whats the best place in Sheffield to get it fixed? Preferably in town or woodseats/abbeydale end. Do PC world fix problems such as this?

BluePolo
Just curious, how do you know it's the connection inside the laptop? On 3 of the laptops I've had at work, the wire has broken where it enters the back of the plug where it gets a lot of flexing. Just touching the plug would make it lose the connection. Have you checked that the plug has power to it by using a meter? As for the price from a shop, if they have to dismantle the laptop then it could cost a small fortune. Unless they are familiar with your make of laptop it takes time to work out which screws to undo to get it apart without breaking anything - time is not cheap. RichJester
I'm pretty sure its inside the laptop. I've had it tested on a meter and the man said the power is fine. How much are we talking about?
donky7
my bro, is a motor mechanic, he charges £25 per hour. these IT blokes will want more than that and dont even get dirty........ as blue states, its not the actual repair that will cost you but the time it takes to get to the conections on the board. RichJester
How easy is it to spot a loose connection on the motherboard? Another thing is it charges easier when the laptop is switched off, rather than if it is switched on. I can hardly ever get it to charge when it is on. gingablade
I would think you would be looking at about £100 roughly. Standard charge at one of the computer repair guys who has had some good reviews on here is £25 to look at it then this is taken of the cost of the repair. As this is something i have had repaired on a few lappys in the past £80 + vat which some of you may think expensive but before I found the guy I am using at the moment for work I was looking at £130 for the same lob. sallonoroff
If you had it repaired by Compaq/HP or an approved service centre, they'd probably replace the motherboard to 'fix' the dodgy power connector. You might find someone locally who's willing to wield the soldering iron... but like others have said, it'd cost a lot for the time to open it up - even if the soldering only takes 2 minutes. Either way, i wouldn't risk it at PCWorld...
