Lindos
What do you think? Are they cheap enough to persuade people not to drive? Certainly they are reasonable enough for short hops, or for groups sharing, but what if you need to get a cab home from the centre alone? A cab to Meadowhall or Tinsley can cost £15.00, compared to £1.80 on the tram or about £1.50 each way in my own car.

Bago
It's still more expensive than private taxis. Black cabs can be good if there are 4 or 5 people sharing. It depends on the journey really. A friend of mine mentioned that she got a cab home for 4 people from the Birmingham NEC, which works out cheaper than the trains ! So it is possible, depending on where you go. I pay around a fiver to get home from S1, to S2. I know someone else who paid around 8 quid from Leadmill to Hillsborough. Opposite the park. Plain Talker
In a black cab, barring any stoppages/delays, which can bump the meter up, i pay about a fiver, for the not-quite-two-miles from the train station to psalter lane. In a private-hire car, for the same distance, the fare is about four quid/ £4.50, give or take. the advantage of a black cab is that you can get pushchairs or wheelchairs in the cab without having to collapse them down, which you'd generally have to do in a minicab. the disadvantage is that, on the black-cab's meters, any delay of over a couple of minutes (IIRC) knocks money onto the fare, whereas, in a minicab, the fare is on the mileage alone, so there are no hidden extras to surprise you. It's a bit swings and roundabouts. and, Never-wrong, some people, eg disabled or elderly people, are forced to use a cab, and pay that sort of ridiculous fare to get to "mad-as-hell", because they cannot access buses or the supertram from where they live. (there may not be a wheelchair-friendly bus where they live, or they may not live near enough to a tram route) it's not as simple for some people, as just "hopping onto" a bus. sccsux
What do you think? Are they cheap enough to persuade people not to drive? No. It cost me £15.00 to get from Sheffield railway station to Treeton (Wilf Jays) - it's the only place I've found, that has a model of vehicle the same as mine:D. I will continue to use the car:thumbsup:.
Carborundum
Black cabs are usually fare-er than those dodgy private taxis that I sometimes yet when I have had a few - I have been really ripped off once or twice by those ..
