Hoping to stop smoking after 25 years HELP...

Recommended Posts

I am hoping to stop smoking on the 27th of December after 25 years.

I smoke about 25 a day & have withdrawal symptoms if I go without for an hour.

I have got to do this for my health, my purse & for society as a whole.

I work at NGH & from 1st of Jan even their grounds will be no smoking.

The reason I have picked the 27th is because I am having surgery & probably won't be able to get out for the day at least.

I know I will be the most horrible person until I get over the cravings, seeing is believing!!!

I am such a bitch if I've gone without for a couple of hours, I think my fella will be throwing them at me by the end f the day (he has never smoked).

So the reason for this thread is for you guys who have already gone through what I am gonna go through to give me all the advice you can & support if you don't mind. If I am successful I will even give an account of how I am feeling on the days after.

I don't want people posting who are gonna critisise, after all I am doing what you feel I should do so please give your advice & support, I know I'm gonna need it.

Good for you - I did it after 30+ years of over 20 a day, that was 11 years ago! I did go to a hypnotherapist, but only needed one session and I've never wanted another cigarette. I had no nicotine withdrawal symptoms at all. I hope you find the best method for you and I'm sure you'll do it if its what you really want.

I stopped on 2 January after 30 years of smoking and several attempts to stop. I used (and still use) nicotine chewing gum. I still want a fag every now and again, but at least I know that I can actually go without. I started on the full strength gum and cut down to low strength after a few weeks. I need to think of a way to start getting rid of the gum completely, but I reckon after 30 years of the evil weed, it'll take me a bit longer than 12 months to kick nicotine completely. At least my lungs are recovering and I'm not taking in 40 carcinogens twenty times each day.

Take it one day at a time - or even one fag break at a time. Congratulate yourself every time you do without when you would normally light up, and *don't* give up giving up: even if you break down and have a smoke, don't let it mean that you start regularly smoking again. Everyone makes mistakes, it doesn't mean you have to live with it forever. If you succumb and buy cigarettes, only buy 10: if you have some at the end of the night, give them away, shred them or soak them in water. If you do this, it means you can't be tempted back into regular smoking the next morning. If you don't succeed this time, it doesn't mean that you will never succeed. I've tried to give up many times over the last 10 years, and this is the longest I've ever been without a cigarette since I was TWELVE years old.

I wish you luck - this may be the biggest battle of your life. If nothing else, salute yourself for making such a sensible decision!

Best of luck!

I smoked from the age of 11 to my early sixties and then I stopped. I didn't take anything, I didn't eat more, or use a substitute; I just stopped. I finally accepted that smoking would probably cause me to die before my father and mother.
