Feeling sorry for myself- sprained ankle

Recommended Posts

Boohoo I've sprained my ankle and it kills! Did it last week and it got a bit better over the weekend but now it's got worse. It's really swollen and bruised and I can't walk on it again. Trouble is I'm away from home so can't go to the doctor's.

I think it's a high ankle sprain as my leg hurts too.

Anything I can do for it? I don't think ice will really work anymore... I have chocolates and mince pies as payment for willing servants? car essential

The immediate treatment for all soft tissue injuries of this type is RICE- rest, ice, compression, elevation.

Strap it well, keep it raised, use it as little as possible (and if all that means that you get to sit on the sofa and eat the mince pies yourself then that can't be all bad can it?) and take anti-inflammatories and paracetamol to make it more bearable.

Not obeying the rules will make your healing time longer- there's no other way through it I'm afraid. Looks like you're having a quiet Christmas.

Sprained ankle?

I've got a bloody ingrown toe-nail! It's agony!

I only caught the chair leg with it, and it nearly had me in tears.

Had 'em before, just wait til it goes a green-ish color, then dig it out with a stanley blade. :)

Don't know what to say about a sprained ankle, apart from.... rest.

I know how you feel funkymiss, i dislocated my kneecap 3 weeks ago and it hurt like hell, im recovering now but find that the only thing to take down swelling is bag of frozen peas on for at least half an hour, mould it round you ankle and then put a towel round it, then after you've had peas on get a hot water bottle or wheat bag that you can put in the microwave and pop that on, not straight on the skin, put something like a towel until it cools down, then put on to skin, this is called a contrast bath and if you keep doing it at regular intervals the swelling should come down, also keep your leg elevated and take some ibuprofen or co-codamols for the pain and swelling, hope this helps chuck!! xx

Thanks peeps! Good to know others are suffering too. Just joking! I looked up google images for ankle sprains and mine is worse than most of them lol :)

I'll try that contrast bath. Hope the toes, ankles and knees all get better soon x

Quite often a sprained ankle is looked upon as a minor injury.

3 years ago i sparined my ankle, I heard something crack & was in so much agony I turned the air blue with my tears & language.

I went to A & E, was given an elastic bandage & sent on my way.

I had the next 5 weeks off work I couldn't even sit with my leg at a normal angle, unless it was raised without being physically sick. I was constantly going to A & E because I was in so much pain & when I did manage to hobble about I would constantly go over on my ankle again.

From that day to this I constantly go over on my ankle, I can't dance, jump or wear heels for the fear of spraining yet again. After visiting several physio's, A & E & many Xrays confirming nothing is broken I eventually insisted my GP refered me to orthopaedics (bone doctor). I had the appointment last January. I saw the dr for 10 mins, he did a small test where he put my leg at a right angle & jerked on my foot & he said straight away your tendons are so loose & damaged they will never repair without surgery & he put me on the waiting list. I had an MRI scan that confirmed I have no ligament support in my ankle. I am now at the top of the list & will have surgery in March. They need to cut tendons from the back of my foot, drill holes in my bone & put the cut tendon where there is no support. I will be in hospital about a week, In a cast for about 2 months, then weeks of physio & maybe if everything goes according to plan I will be able to go back to work after 3 months. However I have a circulation problem, so it may take longer.

I don't need to intend to frighten you Funky, there are 3 grades of a sprain, mine was the worst but to A & E a sprain is a sprain. If I'd have had the correct treatment (put in a cast) back then I probably wouldn't need surgery now.

So I feel for you funky & if you feel its not getting better get help ASAP.

The other advice already given is spot on "RICE".

Hope you get better soon!
