LordChaverly
Before we (here meaning the EU and the UK) start cosying up any closer to Libya's Gaddafi, we ought to take note of this disgraceful case. I suspect that these nurses are pawns in the mad colonel's attempts to bribe and blackmail the EU into granting him and his despotic regime further favours. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6194325.stm
Guest Mod_Man
I read about this yesterday and found it very sad. Like the report says "There were cases of HIV in the hospital before these members of staff weer employed and they're being used as scapegoats." Whatif wewin
These medics have been imprizoned for six years. Their guilt is trying to save lives. This just shows what a despotic regime still exists in Libya.
Hellbilly
It's pretty obvious that Gadaffi knows their innocent and now it's come to light that he may be prepared to trade their lives over for the Mass Murderer of the Lockerbie bombing....how predictable. The words of 'a leopard never changes its spots' comes to mind. If they do execute these prisoners they need to be tought a few lessons, re-establish sanctions on them & send a couple of Xmas Prezzies (cruise missiles) their way. TeaFan
If these were British nurses, and this was Saudi Arabia instead of Libya, would the BAE order books take precedence over their rights, I wonder. Lets hope for their sake that no Bulgarian defence companies are flogging stuff to the Libyans.

Lets hope for their sake that no Bulgarian defence companies are flogging stuff to the Libyans. I doubt this very much. The outcry in the UK would be such that no government would be able to sacrifice the lives of British citizens in thrall for commercial advantage. It would be headline news virtually every day. Bulgaria is a small country with little international clout or influence. This is probably why this disgraceful episode has dragged on for so long. However, Bulgaria joins the EU last month and Gaddafi will no doubt find that it is one thing to bully or ignore a small European country but it is quite another to take on the combined might of the EU, which has very considerable economic and diplomatic muscle at its disposal.
