gempud
We took Lilly, our dog to be spayed this morning...bless her, she didn't have the foggiest idea of what was going to happen and walked quite happily off with the vet. We turned up at 6pm to be greeted by a very woozy miserable dog who looked very sorry for herself. She has to wear one of the big collars for 10 days as she tends to clean herself a lot down there so she would inevitably mess with the stitches. I know it's horrible but we couldn't help but giggle when she walked straight into the wall due to her not being used to accounting for the width of a collar on her head! She is now curled up in her bed in the big crate we borrowed. She hasn't had any water yet so also has not had any food as the care sheet says she cannot eat until she has had a little water, and kept it down for two hours. We have some eggs ready in preparation to make her scrambled eggs as it also says it will be good to feed her something light like this for her first meal. She hasn't eaten for 16 hours now though as we had to starve her from 6pm last night - should I be worried? The care sheet also says she cannot go up and down the stairs. She usually sleeps up in our bedroom so my bloke is having to sleep on the settee tonight just to keep an eye on her in her crate overnight...she wouldn't settle if she was sleeping in a different room to us and also she keeps whining as she breaths so we just want to keep an eye on her - I feel like we are being way too over protective and worrying too much! We also are not looking forward to only allowing her one 10 minute walk each day as the vet advised - she's used to at least 2 40 minute walks a day, if not more. Has anyone else who has had their bitch spayed needed to stick with these measures for the full 10 days?
Lindseyw
All 3 of mine have been spayed, although none had to wear collars. Our vet recomended a little scrambled egg or boiled chicken as soon as she was ready & only water to drink. How old is she ? What breed is she ? Smaller dogs tend to get over things like this much quicker than bigger dogs. Just keep an eye on her & make sure she doesn't jump on or off the sofa or bounce around too much, she should be ok, but if you are worried at all - call your out of hours vet service. Lotti
It usually depends on the dog. Mine's never been spayed but I know people who haven't had to do it for as long but these are usually people with lots of experience and had a few bitches spayed so know what to look out for. I know a few who have cut it down to a week because their bitch has healed so quickly. So it really does depend on the dog. I think, if possible stick to it for the full 10 days just to be sure but vets say 10 days to be on the safe side expecting the healing process to be a little shorter
gempud
Thanks for that. She is 3 or 4, we are not sure so I'm going for 3 and a half! She is a Staffy cross so a medium sized dog. She does like to jump up onto the sofa for a cuddle with us so that's going to be soooo hard to put a stop to for the next 10 days. She's woken up and is now crying but walking around so we're going to try her with some water and fuss her a lot!
Strix
I wouldn't worry about over fussing her I spent most of last week sleeping on the sofabed to keep our temporary resident company whilst I had him caged - and I think he needed it
Lotti
gempud, it might be worthwhile, when she's in the room with you, to sit down on the floor to give her a cuddle. That's how I put my dogs off going on the sofa. She'll want plenty of cuddles but if you sit on the floor she'll hopefully come to you rather than trying to get on the sofa. Also if your sofa cushions are removable, put one on the floor for her so she still has the comfort of the sofa but on the floor
gempud
Hi Lottie - yes we worked that one out quite quickly and we have been sitting on the floor with her to give her cuddles. She is full of beans today and nearly back to her normal self but I think she is getting very frustrated because she can't go for her usual long walks or have the run of the house as usual. She seems to be making a good recovery though so we have stopped worrying a bit. Thanks for the advice!
gempud
Quick update. Lilly had to go to the vets this morning after being sick last night for no reason. The area around her wound had also swelled up a lot. It's hard to describe apart from to say that it was the size of a fat sausage at either side of her stitches and seeing as it was the 4th day after her op we thought we would check with the vets. She was looking quite sorry for herself too. The vets gave her a couple of anti inflammitory injections and we have tons of anti biotics and have to take her back again tomorrow. Everything has been a disaster since we got her! I had flu for half of her first week, then she got spayed in her second week with us and has been unable to go for long walks and it seems to have also undone any progress we had made in her training. Her and the cat don't seem to want to get on with each other and the cat refuses to come in the house when she is there and now I have also hurt the tendon in my foot so can't move around or take her out and it all falls to my other half. She also doesn't move round very well wearing the big funnel collar and has managed to chip most of the paint off the walls of my house due to walking into them. All this before and over Christmas too...Bah Humbug! But all this doesn't stop me loving her to bits and spoiling her to death and I so could not imagine life without her even though we have only had her for 2 weeks

Have a look at a couple of other threads on spaying - it may be that she's had an allergic reaction to the stitches
