melthebell
try stopping programs from running in the background, especially your antivirus too, or it may keep stopping the defrag process
Eric_Collins
try stopping programs from running in the background, especially your antivirus too, or it may keep stopping the defrag process i'd recomend that strongly with Win98 or you'll get the yoyo affect and defragin will take forever ( & thats no joke). ________ Toyota Avanza History

The only thing I have to turn off in order to defrag (win 98) is the SpyBot TeaTimer. No need to kill AV or FW:).

No need to kill AV or FW:). on ME i found i had to close most things, or it did keep stopping, not so on xp but if you do experience it stopping, close stuff and not just stuff youve got open, go into task manager and stop stuff
sccsux
on ME i found i had to close most things, or it did keep stopping, not so on xp I too used to have to terminate a few items in order to defrag under 98. However, AVG no longer needs to be turned off for defrag, nor does ZAP. Only TeaTimer (which are the only things running in the BG on this box - M$ fixes excepted). Don't know with XP, as I don't use it, and who in their right mind uses ME?

fnkysknky
On the odd occasion I do defrag (not that necessary with NTFS) then I just boot into safe mode and run it. Makes sure there's nothing running in the back ground that writes to disk and interrupts the defrag process.
