Yellowrose
One of the apple trees I planted last month has opened its leaf buds. Should I do anything? The weather has obviously confused it and I presume the frost will kill off the new leaf-lets. Will they come back?
medusa
Since apple trees are hardy, and the new buds that form in the spring do it long before the frosts have stopped, I wouldn't worry too much. I think that they will just stop progressing any further at some point, and stay that way until the spring, when they'll start again.
Yellowrose
Cant wait for it to grow up so I can try some mistletoe out on it.
Strix
ah, we had a problem with a new apple tree and a frost It was a minnarette. It's delicate buds were frostbitten by a late frost, and the whole tree never recovered (decided to only grow at the top) As it's a young tree, I'd wrap it in agricultural fleece until the weather gets warmer again - just to be on the safe side
torin8
If you have any plants that are either not hardy or have started to open their buds then it's probably best to get out there this weekend (tonight if poss!) and fleece them up. It''s going to be cold and frosty (with a chance of snow) over the next 5-7 days.
Yellowrose
I dont know if its too late or not but the new leaves are a bit shrivelled already. I have some bubble wrap I can wrap it in.
torin8
The more protection you can give it even if it has some damage will help - otherwise it could be seriously knocked back...
