Anything with less than 4 wheels is a deathtrap in my opinion :)
I agree when it's in the hands of a young kid. I have bikes but I don't want my kids on them and I told my son recently I'd give them up forever if it stopped him having one. Hypocritical of course I know.

My son is 16 in January and I'm considering buying him a scooter/moped, what's the law regarding the size of engine?

Where is a good place to buy one from?

Would you trust a 16yr old on a scooter in Sheffield?

He is limited to a 50cc engine. He will need to pass his CBT (Compulsory Bike Training) This should cost less than £100, even less if he does it on his own bike. It is a one day course, and EVERYONE passes more or less. The Yellow Pages are full of CBT schools.

As for trusting him on it....well, that depends on your son I suppose.

This is also restricted to 30mph and it is less than that going up hills, the bigger danger will properly be other road uses not your son.

When he as got one he will probably want it de-restricting, this is illegal until he is 17 and will invalidate his insurance, that’s what the bike shop told us anyway.

I've never heard of anything about restricting the speed to 30mph, is this a new law?

Surely that would be extremely dangerous as you have to 'make progress' in areas with speed limits above 30mph.

You sure your not getting confused with having to have restricters fitted to keep engines under 33bhp?

Nope, its always been the law for under 17s. Engine cant be bigger than 50cc, and must be restricted to 30mph. Any deristriction/tuning/modifications before hes 17 will mean hes riding without a valid licence or insurance. CBT will cost around 90-100 quid, and has to be done before hes allowed to ride on public roads.

Good places to buy one from.....

SMC, Saville Street-Yamaha dealers

Manhatten Motorcycles, Heeley-Peugeot dealers

HMC-just off Staniforth road-Aprilia dealers

Jeff Hall Motorcycles, Langsett Road-Piaggio/Gilera/Vespa dealers

Hes also going to need a helmet, armoured jacket and gloves at the very least (Id reccomend armoured trousers as well).

I was never aware of that bit of info, thanks.

I was *cough* slightly older than 17 when I passed my bike test :suspect:

Personally I wouldn't be happy knowing I didn't have the power to get out of some idiots way, if I was restricted to under 30mph, wait another year, when he'll have more of a chance of saving himself.

This is the argument that the kids use for having them de-restricted and they have got a point, cant make normal progress on a dual carriageway (40mph), doing 20mph up a steep hill with a bus or a lorry bearing down on you.
