it's going to be a betmax v vhs battle again isn't it, we can all discuss which ones the best, but ulimately nobody knows which ones going to be the outright winner.

i'm going to leave it a couple of years until we know which ones going to be the one.

just a quick edit, i wrote that before i read the full article, it does look like hd dvd is coming out on top, which i expected tbh.

There is room, as the article suggests, for both to win, but in different areas. HDDVD has, initially, done better due to the problems that held Blu-Ray up (manufacture of the lasers being the chief culprit), and now, in trying to recoup the cost of the problems, the Blu-Ray devices are going to be more expensive.

However, as the media for Blu-Ray is larger, and more suited to data, there is the possibility that should it flounder in the DVD market, it will focus on the computer market instead.

All in all, it is a shame that 2 similar formats were developed at the same time, and that there is no cross-compatibility.

As you say, Beta vs VHS all over again.

Will have to see. So long as the price is right I don't care. Video quality is equal on both formats now as well and I think audio codecs for BR have just caught up at last.

The thing that makes HD-DVD better for me is I can get an Xbox360, then save up for a HD-DVD drive separately :)

A key difference (I say this before seeing either in action) is that no one seems to be claiming an edge in quality, either audio OR visual.

Ok, they may make claims, but not sure they are borne out.

VHS and Beta used to make claims that one was better in terms of sound quality or picture, but for Blu Ray and HD-DVD, the only claim is that Blu Ray has more storage space (even though HD-DVD has enough room for about 3 films!).

Therefore surely attention must go to price, and at the min there is only 1 winner - HD-DVD.

Then again, Sony do have the PS3/Blu-Ray combo. I think without that the battle would already be over.

Sony has a history of failing at introducing new formats. Beetamax was sony, as was minidisk and super audio CD.

Bluray has more storage capacity but betamax was the superior format, as was minidisk compared to tape when it came out in the mid ninties.

I just cant see sony winning this war, especially seeing how popular the 360 seems to be and the extortionate price of the bluray players.

£130ish for the addon HD DVD player which works with your pc as well will win this format war.

History will indeed repeat itself then, Sony will bring out Blu-Ray, and it WILL flop, because nobody will be able to afford, or be willing if they have sense, to pay £450 for a PS3 or other dedicated Blu-Ray player just to play Blu-Ray discs on it..

It's all about finances and what we as consumers can/can't afford, not fanboyism or the fact that as previously documented I hate Sony.

It's far too early to call this race. I believe that as of this time, HD-DVD is outselling Blu-Ray 6:1. HD-DVD was first to market and this is an important factor. Sony's strategy of using PS3 as a trojan horse to get Blu-Ray into people's homes will fail as long as there aren't enough units to go around. Meanwhie, more HD-DVD players are getting into the channel and Microsoft's HD-DVD add-on for 360 is doing well.

However, with the support of a good number of electronics and entertainment giants, Blu-Ray has a fighting chance. PS3 is not the only factor in Blu-Ray's success.

People will buy the most freely available and most value for money system.
