nuttygirl
I was just wondering: I know there are 8 coloured cards once you've reached a certain number of donations, but what are they? I know the first one is red, then it's blue, but what afterwards? Also, this is a post to get people to do something special for someone this Christmas, and give blood - there run especially low this time of year

nuttygirl
Wow! 100 donations? At a rate of 3 a year which they recommend, that's 34 years!!!
LombardLady
Wow! 100 donations? At a rate of 3 a year which they recommend, that's 34 years!!! True, but it's been done. Some people started at 18 and are now pushing 60, and still at it.
Fudgecakebab
Do you get paid for this?
LombardLady
Do you get paid for this? No. The NHS has always been vehemently against paying for blood; arguments include the facts that, if people are being paid for their blood, they're far more prone to lie about any reason they shouldn't donate it, and also far more prone to try to donate more often than is safe. Just out of interest, whats a safe amount to give in one sitting? There is only 8 pints in the body.....I think. Do you feel weak and tired after? Darbees
Wow! 100 donations? At a rate of 3 a year which they recommend, that's 34 years!!!If you donate platelets which are used for conditions such as leukaemia you can donate up to 8 times a year because they remove your blood, take the platelets from it and then put it back. Just out of interest, whats a safe amount to give in one sitting? There is only 8 pints in the body.....I think. Do you feel weak and tired after?sometimes when you get off the bed you feel a little dizzy, they don't let you leave immediately and you are given a cup of tea and a biscuit. After that you generally feel "normal". Everyone should do it, you feel good for having done it too because it's so easy and can make such a difference to someone. ELSoames
i have been doing it since 17, now 23, couldn't do it for two years whilst undergoing tests at hospital but now try and get every 4 months. Last time I went i fainted, I'd had breakfast, lunch and plenty to drink and had been 6 times before with no problems. I'm a rarer type of blood B+ and like to give for this reason. Also my bf was in hospital for 2 months and recieved blood transfusions so you see where the blood goes which makes you think. It annoys me when people want to be paid for doing this, when it only takes an hour to recreate the blood you've just given. Its an hour of your life which makes a difference. The only problem i see is the people who recieve blood can never donate again or for the first time.
