JoeP
I love True Grit - and I've always enjoyed El Dorado and The Sons of Katie Elder. Unsurprisingly, I also like Rio Bravo - El Dorado is almost a remake of it but they're both great films. I suppose my favourite is El Dorado, because I like Bob Mitchum as well - he reminds me of my dad.

I actually like Robert Mitchum better than John Wayne.I think its because my husband looked just like Mitchum when we were courting.

Sands of Iwo Jima! That's a good one! And he was excellent in 'The Horse Soldiers' with William Holden - albeit another western!

artisan
He once had to deliver a line, when playing a Roman Centurion, present at the death of Jesus on the Cross. The line was 'This truly was the Son of God' He delivered the line in his his usual manner. The director stopped him, and said, John this is the son of god, put more 'awe' into your words. He delivered in the same dull monotone 'Aww, this truly was the Son of God' What a man.
