Jazzybmzoo
Why do we have to be English? Normally I am so very, VERY proud to be English but on days like this it just seems all so very depressing. I'm normally quite positive but I really think our cricketers are well & truly buggered and rightfully so after turning a game they should easily have won, on its head & losing quite comfortably instead!..Only England could manage this feat: 'No team in history has lost after declaring on a higher total than England's 551-6 batting first in a Test.' So well done there then. I can't even bring myself to be mad. :(
mikeG
I agree Jazzy. If we lost in the days of Trueman and Statham, we did at, least go down fighting rather than pathetically. What Botham must think of their performance I can only guess at, but I have a good idea.
boboskins
Well Jazzy at least you can get some proper sleep now coz it won't be worth staying up for the rest of it. Part and parcel of being English is to build our sporting heroes up far too much only to realise that actually we aren't really that good. Take your pick from Football/Cricket/Rugby/Athletics all these get hyped up and (occasionally) win something only for everything to come crashing down at the next major tournament. I know it's hard to take but we should all be used to this by now. Anyway look on the bright side at least the England cricket team are making and breaking new records! Jazzybmzoo
My mate has just wrote this via email: 'I woke up this morning and turned on the TV and I thought to myself: "Can my life possibly get any worse than this?". Then I looked out of the window and saw it was p:ssing it down and realised I had to walk to work. It made me think of the words of Blackadder: "Of course it can".' --- Nuff said. Ousetunes
Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. What muppets. Can you imagine the Aussies being in our position in their second innings - they'd have put another 500 on the board. The entire England squad should send their MBEs back to Her Majesty. Another five-nil drubbing, just as I predicted. Australia didn't win the match; England lost it. And how.
scottf
its just pathetic isn't it! give the captaincy to strauss to take some pressure off flintoff, drop anderson- the man is useless and will someone PLEASE fcukng play panasar!
barnie41
The real problem is - who else is there, outside the current England squad, who Fletcher will even look at for the future? You're right, Monty should have played and Anderson is pants.
Mattel
I wonder how much this is not just an issue of 'have we got the right players out there' but 'why aren't we making the right sort of players' from our local game. I applaud the introduction of overseas players to the county game which adds a significant degree of spectacle to the performances of many teams and certainly raises the profile of the game...BUT I worry that the structure of the game in England isn't built to focus on the bringing forward of new homegrown talent Jones, Pieterson, Harmison, Strauss from the team have all spent significant time abroad I thought. but rather to have an impressive spectacle of cricket that keeps the public interest in the game alive and therefore creates revenue from bums-on-seats. This approach WILL work but isn't a long-term goal. The success of the England team has CLEARLY improved the public enthusiasm for the game so why can't we make that the long-term goal and plan accordingly to bring home-grown players through and give them every help? You can hold the Aussie method as the best, but in reality there cricket system is backed by a many-sport-wide training and support network that I believe we just don't have (at the same level of maturity) in this country. We rely on outstanding performances to win us games, but if both teams were to perform to their best we would still get beaten.... GRRRRRRRRR /rant Mattel
