Hello,

the date of the next Federation meeting is Monday the 19th February 7.00pm at the Park Gardeners Club off Crickett Inn Road, there is ample parking space and the tram and the bus stop virtually outside. Main theme will be crime prevention and we are hoping to have local police in attendance.

I am in total agreement with you, yes the Council should provide for rubbish being moved off allotments, however they 'dont have the budget' to do it.

Unfortunately Violia dont currently collect rubbish from allotment sites, however it is something the Federation is looking in to as part of an ongoing process to improve all allotment sites.

I understand that this is not very helpful and I know the problems you are facing as I had exactly the same problems when I took over my plot nearly 2 years a ago and my other half took on a plot towards the end of last year and so far we have taken 8 car loads of rubbish to the skip and still have a mountain of rubbish to move.

Do you have an allotment society on your site? If so maybe the society could pay for a skip for the whole site.

I will let you know if and when we get anything sorted. Sorry I could not be of more help.

I would refer you to the post of 27.1.2007 the meeting of Roe Wood Allotment Society with the head of gardens and allotments section of the council. The point of rubbish removal was raised and the reply we were given was that to cover the 74 sites in Sheffield would cost the allotments department £15.000 for two skips a year. It was suggested that we should write, e-mail contact our local councillors to put pressure on this problem. It would appear from reading posts on the Forum that all sites have the same problem. If as you state it costs £80 to change a light bulb, we could have 3000 plus voices raised in protest at the councils lack of interest in our allotments.

If you get in touch with your local Area Panel, which is usually chaired by one of your local councillors (most area panels meet every other month) you can push the allotment issues there, the more people who raise the issue the better it will be as then they will start to realise that we are serious about getting better service. Area panel details can be pulled up via the Sheffield City Council web site. You can also drop in on local councillors at their 'surgeries' and raise the issue on a one to one basis.
