I'm a non smoker but virtually all of the regulars in my local are. I think I would rather put up with their smoke than sit on my own!
sheffieldfox
Is it not possible for these smokers to come in the pub and not smoke? Then you wouldn't be on your own.
scentral
I don't smoke but this will be disastrous for the pub trade. Absolutely nothing to do with the government, meddling with how people choose to run their business. It should be down to the pub whether they are smoking or not and then people can make their choice whether to go or not. The way it's going, how long before some prissy vegetarian asks for somebody eating steak at the next table to be moved? The trouble is, all those people who sniffily ask for people not to smoke (in a pub FFS!) are usually those who indulge in far more anti-social behaviour such as taking dogs/screaming kids into pubs or use their pathetic mobiles. JaneWilson
Smoking bans have worked in other countries, one example being Ireland. It looks likely that pubs in England and Wales will follow the Irish example and erect heated awnings outside for smokers to use. As a non-smoker I'll be glad to finally enjoy a night out with my smoker friends and not have to (a) breathe their smoke, and (b) have my clothes reek of stale tobacco. I think that the smoking ban is long overdue and don't believe that pubs will lose very much trade (see the Irish example), because greater numbers of non-smokers may now venture out. If the ban gives people an incentive to give up smoking, all the better still. Any tax revenue lost from declining tobacco sales is offset by the reduced cost of treating smoking-related illness. astronaut77
I'm sure people will still manage to have a good time without having to smoke. When they banned smoking on aeroplanes and trains smokers didn't suddenly stop travelling or going on holiday, and I didn't see any airline companies close down or go out of business... ELSoames
On a recent trip to scotland, where there is a non smoking ban already, the pubs were still full and people went outside for their fags. I personally hate smoking, especially when I'm eating. I don't understand the addiction and why people throw that much money away every day. People will get used to it

Well said, cannot wait for smoking ban to come in! Pubs will not lose out when ALL pubs become non-smoking as people will then not have a choice about whether to go to a 'smoking' or 'non smoking' pub. People are not going to stay at home and go without their pint! Naive to think they will do! I wonder how many pubs will be 'forward thinking' and ban smoking before the 1 July 2007 deadline. I will go in those and stay out of the smoky sh**hole pubs!
