Bartfarst
Considering that the UK's average (mean) salary is 'about' £25k, I would say that £100k, or even £50k, each is far from 'middle income' whether the earners are middle class or not. A head teacher on £75K?? You have to be joking!! My mum wasn't on even half that as a headteacher! Even the head of a large secondary school in a major city would be pushed to better £45-50k. The top rate for a head teacher, depending on shcool, area and their professional grade, is about £85k.

Its actually over £100K - I've got the pay scale at home somewhere. Teachers pay is pretty good these days. My other half is a primary classroom teacher with no additional responsibilities and over £30K ain't bad
Cyclone
You don't reach head teacher, or colonel or police sergeant or detective inspector within the first few years of your career though. So even taking into account that there are some middle class professions where high salaries are possible, it doesn't mean that every person who's started teaching or joined the forces as an officer is earning this money. The proportion of households earning =>100k/annum is tiny. Even the amature statistics show it clearly, if only 20% of households in the country manage 66k, then how can 100k be middle earning. angle20
In this country we have an illusion of a good standard of living because the cost of some of the discretionary higher value goodies - such as cars, electrical goods and holidays - has been stable, or has even fallen in real terms. We do, however (compared with a lot of other western countries) get hammered on items such as tax, housing costs, utilities, transport (public or car) and groceries.
