Heyesey
Clarke is on record as being very uneasy about accepting this if he wins ... he feels he's basically being given an award for his wife dropping down dead.
mr craig
I'd say there are 5-6 people who actually deserve to be there.

Concur. He would get my vote not because of sympathy but the fact that he battled through adversity and won all his three matches at the Ryder. It took great courage, grit and skill to win those matches and the award would also be a fitting memorial to his departed wife who was a great advocate for European golf. Which is EXACTLY why he wants you to vote for someone else.
donuticus
Joe Calzaghe. Best British boxer for the last ten years, but after demolishing Jeff Lacy earlier this year he gave the best sporting performance of the year by far.
Teabag
Which is EXACTLY why he wants you to vote for someone else. I think you misread my post...I do not want him to win just because I feel sorry for his wife dying. The fact that he led the way in the Ryder Cup and won all three matches and was the talisman for that team IN THE CONTEXT of his personal struggles was great sport and drama. A similar example would be Armstrong winning the tour after two years out with his battle with cancer. To achieve one of the pinnacles of their sport in the context of dramatic private battles makes great champions does it not? He has not declined from the competition and I understand his reservations but this is voted by the public and if he wins he must accept that people recognise that the guy was extraordinary on that course in Ireland earlier in the year. I think if he did win he would be able to dedicate it to his wife but that is not the reason why he should win! I don't think that is feeling sorry for someone - great sport is played against the backdrop of many personal and public battles...it is not simply about who gets most points and medals. Sport represents human struggle...sorry getting a bit luvvie here:hihi:
