What are people's views on the Police?

Recommended Posts

troubledjoe if your going to ask for peoples opinions on police as quoted in your original post dont go slagging them off when they reply an the post is not to your likeing! i think a big reason why people dont have faith in the police is because there so unreliable! in summer 2004 i disturbed two theives breaking into my shed in the middle of the night i gave chase and got to the top of the road where they had vanished but they had left a moped which they had stolen from a house down the road, i got my sister to call 999 then went back to the scooter after about 20 mins this lad walks up to me telling me some rubbish that he had been chased by some asians in a car so he parked his scooter up and hid from them? obviously i new it was him an told him the police were on there way, he walked off then came back wiv his mate and a brick the size of a football, then told me if i didnt give him the bike he would chuck it at me! i let him have the bike then he chucked the brick at me anyway! luckily it missed! this could of bin provented if the police bothered turning up but they didnt! they decided to turn up 2 hours later when i was back in bed! i had a good description of 1 of the lads and a few days later he was arrested after a photo parade at west bar, he was never prosecuted because they didnt have enough evidence! i could be dead if that brick hit me! thats y i have no faith in the police!

What about the rights of the criminals? The right to legal advice, the right to appeal, the right to this that and the other?

Personally I feel that as soon as someone deprives another human of their rights they automatically forfeit their own.

Now I know a lot of you will be sitting their saying ‘well this doesn’t make us any better than them’ but I think it is time we really started to come down on crims and start to protect the victim.

If someone brakes in to my car/house I should have the right to protect what I have worked so hard to get by whatever means, not just by reasonable force.

if the police bothered turning up but they didnt! they decided to turn up 2 hours later when i was back in bed!

I can't answer why they didn't turn up, but it sounds very unusual. I mean, i've responded within minutes to reports of damage to a bus shelter, let alone someone whose caught thieves in the act. I think a lot depends on what exactly your other half told the 999 operator.

Then again, like i've tried to explain...if there are only X number of officers in that area and they are dealing with other emergencies, where do you think you're going to get a police officer from?

i had a good description of 1 of the lads and a few days later he was arrested

Whoooooaaay..wait a minute here ! So you gave a desciption of the offender and a few days later he was arrested ! Isn't that what you call good police work? Of course it'd be ideal if they had caught him at the time, but it's not an ideal world, is it Bob?

after a photo parade at west bar, he was never prosecuted because they didnt have enough evidence!

Was he picked out on the ID parade?

If so, there was enough evidence to charge him. Was he charged? Did it go to court?

Are you aware that in criminal cases it's the CROWN PROSECUTION SERVICE that decides whether or not a person is charged/appears before a court...and NOT the police? The police only place the information/evidence before them.

i could be dead if that brick hit me! thats y i have no faith in the police!

Yeah, that brick could have hit you. Does your lack of faith in the police extend to a lack of faith in the Crown Prosecution Service and the other Criminal Justice agencies...Presuming that you are aware of them ?

There's a lot of sense in that....I know many will agree with you.

Again..worthy of applause:thumbsup:

'The Police' should be abolished.

The 'police function' should be performed by a form of national service by all adults 'of good standing' between, say, 20yrs and 50 yrs. e.g. : 3Mnths every 3 yrs or similar.(vary according to desired number of police.)

If national service is good enough for waging 'world wars', and policing the soldiers doing that, why not for civil policing?

The present state of manifest uselessness is satisfactory to no-one but our political masters, why continue with it?

Not a bad idea but like when national service was in operation a core of profesionals would be needed for training and specialist work .

I also believe if we had an elected ( non political ) chief constable in each area instead of a goverment appointee we might start to get the police force the people want .

i'm really sorry, but i dont think you've read any of this thread!! if you had you would have some understanding as to why the police may not have turned up immedietly! perhaps it was a busy nite for crime and all the police were tied up, perhaps there were some police on their way to you and somebody was raped and they had to attend that instead, as although your crime was serious obviously some crime take presidence over others!

i have not slagged anybody off, lots of people have made points and i have just tried to give some explanation to oppose their opinions. my previous post about people not being educated i feel was justified, as if the person had read all the thread they would have seen the explanations to their viewpoints and would not have left such a silly comment..... well maybe not.

It doesn't matter to an individual who reports a crime that the police were doing something different/more important - All they will see is whether the police turned up promptly or not.

The police should surely attend every incident they are called to promptly - This would be a measure of how good the service is.

I do accept that they are understaffed, underfunded and could be better equipped but they are not meeting the countries needs and it can't be someone elses fault every time like seems to be suggested by some, even though an many occasions it may well be.

And by pointing out fault you aren't slagging people off, just trying to help them improve.

What you say is true neddio..

I personally think people's view on the police is derived out of a natural wariness of authority.

Remember at school how funny/entertaining it was to see the headmaster trip up or fall etc?

It's the same with the police. This 'service/force' call it what you will, is there to keep law and order and if you step out of line, you might be prosecuted etc...So when they (the police) do something wrong..it's just so healthy to jump on the bandwagon.

I see the difference between police and nurses. You go to casualty on a Friday or Saturday evening and you'll be sitting for 5 or 6 hours in pain, waiting to be dealt with. People accept it and feel sorry for how the nurses have to cope under such conditions, understaffed, poorly represented, funded etc..

Report a crime to the police and if they aren't there within a few minutes...they "must all be sitting with their feet up".."They are rubbish"..."I've lost respect for them"...etc etc..

There should be police officer on every street corner, no one should have to work.there should be a doctor to every three members of the public. all the food in supermarkets should be free, all drinks in pubs free.

I have now joined the society of makers of stupid statements.

Here is a reason why there isn't a police officer to respond to every crime. A 12 year old girl is knocked down and killed. Sorry we can't attend the accident but someones shed has been broken into and they are first in queue.

Yes it is sarcasm but get into the real world for Gods sake.

prioryx is absolutely correct..

The problem nowadays is that too many people call on the police, frankly for non-police matters.

We seem to spend our lives sorting other people's lives out..

There's some stats where we spend 85% of our time dealing with 10% of the population.
