What are people's views on the Police?

Recommended Posts

From when I see them and it’s not very often they seem to think they are above the law. If it’s not parking on double yellow lines while popping out for a kebab its speeding down the ring road and using the wrong lanes to push in front of traffic.

Well if its seriuos crime like murder yes expect an investigation. If its a 999 expect a response.

But if its the sort of crime that affects you and me like your cars been stolen, or your house robbed, or your hand bag snatched, your car scratched, stolen bikes up and down the road, graffiti in your face, fly tipping at the end of your street, loud music, joy riders, anti social behaviour.

well all you can expect from sheffield police is, that all important incident number.

So prevention in most cases is better than cure as the saying goes

I think this thread is going to open a can of worms, but i am interested in peoples view on the Police. I am new to this forum but have already read many Anti-Police comments and threads, and personally i am sick of it. Society would be far worse of without the police and many peoples views on the police are completely ignorant and uneducated! people just seems to want any excuse to have a go, these same people would most likely ring the police in a heartbeat at the first hint of needing help.

The Police do a great service and sadly they cant detect every single crime and yes sadly there are not enough Police around, but do people realise that the Police have hours and hours of paper work to do per week in order to get cases as evidentially tight as possible so that the CPS will put the case for proscecution. And this is on top of collecting statements, leaving jobs half way through to deal with ongoing jobs, having x ammount of tickets to collect etc etc etc.

So people what do you think please?????

Your new to the forum with over 1000 posts ?????????

My brother is a cop and believe me he gets so frustrated with all the red-tape.

All he wants to do is catch the baddies and hope,(which is a big hope)that the judges hand down sentences that actually fit the crime.

I think this is where this thread got reopened....

I've read some of this and other police related threads and am always amused by what people think the police should be doing...

"Why aren't they catching proper criminals rather than*insert whatever the police were doing at the time*?"

"Proper crimes" - Murders, rapes, serious assaults are few and far between. There is a team within the Police that investigate and deal with these offences, usually CID or a specialist team looking at a certain group or type of offence.

"Traffic" - Traffic Officers specifically deal with accidents, collisions, knock downs, but also driving offences such as no insurance, section 59 (anti social use of motor vehicle). They also do evryday responding to calls but are further trained in things such as pursuit and TPAC driving.

"Response" - When you dial 999 this is who will most likely arrive. Respond to emergency calls, fight ongoing, domestic, burglary in progress etc. These might not be the officers who end up dealing with an ongoing problem or even the follow up investigation. Their job is to get there ASAP and sort out the immidiate problem, arrest from scene, restore order etc.

"SNT/NPT" - Safer Neighbourhood or Neighbourhood Policing Teams are locally based officers who work a certain area or beat. Police and Support officers are there to tackle local issues raised by people living/working in the area as well as supporting response from a ground level.

So, why aren't the police doing whatever you think they should be? Well, they probably are, just not ALL of them, others have other things to do. These are just a few roles, there're lots more.

I would love to see an application form to join the police to see what the qualifications are, some of them in the past have appeared to be thugs themselves

Why not just look up the requirements to join, they aren't a secret.

Where do I start really at the moment.

I am sure.. most of the time, they may do a good job.

They have, in the past when needed for me, done the job properly.

This was a good number of years ago.

Nowadays- I see them on the TV and they come across as arrogant and power tripping.

Having discussed a good number of things with them for a good number of years, I found them now to be 'over eager' to up their numbers and stats - yes they may be pushed to this for whatever reason, but again, you should not accept that in a job.

A lot of the time, their very presence can cause more harm than good in a good number of situations when it could be dealt with a lot easily.

Scare tactics are also more widely employed now from what I have seen as well which again, is uncalled for.

And this is before the 'G20 disaster', the shooting on the tube, Hillsborough, the list goes on and on really.
