Anti 4x4 prepare yourselves

in a collision....you're at an advantage.

therefore, 4x4s make driving dangerous for other road users. especially with the poor handling that women have of them and the gung-ho way that men drive them.

:)

well anyone who saw traffic cops lastnight will agree..

All very well and good, but unless you're pottering around town all day (and have no need for a 4x4), then the electric part seems almost useless.

Even then, you'll still have to either charge by plugging in overnight, or use the petrol engine to charge, both of which have an extra environmental impact.

If you go over 50Km/h it uses the petrol engine to run and charge, I presume at reduced efficiency as it charges.

I dunno which has a bigger impact, the pollution from generating the electricity or the polution from burning petrol over the same distance.

Personally I think it's more an exercise in conning people into buying a 4x4, or at least making them not feel quite so bad for buying one. I don't see it as anymore environmentally friendly over traditional 4x4's, the electric still has to be generated and it's clearly not cheaper or we'd all be in electric cars by now. To me, it seems like a bit of a a white elephant.

Not so, they're less safe for their passengers should you have an accident in one.

It gets energy from when the vehicle is decelerating to charge the batteries and then uses that energy to drive the electric motors when accelerating. None of the car makers have yet developed a means of storing enough electricity in a car for it to be a practical proposition and this is a compromise. The reason this vehicle is interesting is because it gives good economy and performance for the type of vehicle it is in relation to others on the market and like it or not there is a demand for 4 x 4s. Whether or not it will catch on remains to be seen as it seems that they don't really benefit the planet long term.

but who can go over 50kmh in rush hour through sheffield and on the parkway?

50 kph is also the max speed thru town anyway, excluding the parkway obviously.

  • 2 weeks later...
Me thinks this is leading down the 4x4 thread again. How long before DaBouncer gets involved?

Only a few weeks

I think the hybrid 4x4's are a good idea personally.

Shuts up the anti 4x4 brigade as their argument for environment damage is made null and void and gives those of us that like 4x4 something nice to drive (albeit expensive).

By the way Johnh my 4x4 is already eco friendly, it runs on that Green Fuel called LPG. Which incidentally is cheaper than petrol and allows me FREE (yes that's FREE) parking in any city centre council car park.

Gordon Brown sneakily put 2.25p plus VAT a litre on lpg and only 1.25p on petrol last week. Not promoting greenness as he purports to. A lot of big 4 x4s are on LPG which is cheaper and greener than hybrids and gets free congestion charge in London, not that anyone in right mind would go there.
