Pseudonym
I've just learned that "Sheffield Animal Hospital" Baslow Rd, Totley, is closing down on the 8th of December... This puts me in a bit of a quandry... I only recently registered with them, had a consultation, blood test, diagnosis of thyroid problem and received one months supply of tablets (not me, the cat! ) Total cost so far £105... Unfortunately, no insurance in force, the animal was to old to insure when I tried a few years back. So... A few questions... It seems likely that he will need this medication for the rest of his life, at a current cost of £35/month... from reading the threads on here, I gather that the vet is legally obliged to issue me with a prescription, can he charge for issuing it? Where can I get it filled? Does it have to be dispensed by another vet? And the most important question of all, can anyone recommend a good (preferably reasonably-priced) vet in, or local to, the Sheff 10 area? Any advice/info welcome... Thanks... Lotti
We used to take our cats to Hallam Vets on Crookes, then we moved to the Hallam Vets on Hillsborough - that was mum's choice as she deals with the cats health bills etc. I chose to take the dogs to the one on Hillsborough when my aunt recommended it and so far they've been ok - they are good with Takara, they haven't seen Eddy yet, but she hasn't had much need for vets so far so I don't know what they're like in an ongoing issue... JoeP
Used Hallam Vets for 15+ years - they seem to be pretty good. Tend to use the Crookes branch because it's easier for me to get there, but both have provided excellent service.
bluesandtwos
abbey vet group have served us well over the years, but think our branch, in Deepcar, is the most southern they do, as primarily a Barnsley group.
Pseudonym
Thank you all for the response... Hallam Vets was recommended to me a while ago but I hadn't realised that they had a branch at Crookes... That's only 2-3 miles away so probably my best bet it seems... Looking at the map, the only drawback I can see is possibly finding somewhere to park! Thanks again for the info, much appreciated...
rubydazzler
There's a vets at Olivet Road at Woodseats, but I can't remember the name, i'll check it out for you tomorrow. Everyone seems to have a good word for them. PS any idea WHY they're closing?

It's Peak Vets I think you're referring to, but it's a fair bit further to travel than Crookes for me... re: Totley closing ... As I understand it, they're closing the Totley branch and the vet is transferring to their Eckington practice... I wasn't given a reason. I was told this when I called this afternoon to book an appointment... The person I spoke to said that "The letters are going out today", so it all seems rather sudden as they are shutting shop on Dec 8th!
Lotti
Pseudonym, I never have a problem parking on Crookes, there's that many little side roads that there's usually somewhere to park on one of them and there's no residential permit scheme up there. Good luck whatever you decide.

YET! Cheers for that Lotti, I guess I've been spoiled, Totley vets had their own large car park right outside the door... very convenient when transferring a loudly complaining moggie to the waiting-room! I'll be calling in at Crookes tomorrow to get some information, it seems the most suitable from what I'm told here.... One point though, why did you transfer to the Hillsborough branch? Was it closer to you? Or was there another reason? Pseudo...
zozzer
I used to use that vets as it was convenient. but I have heard some very bad reports from other people. they have had to shut because they couldn’t get vets to stay there.
